‘The Fighter’ (2010)
Rotten Tomatoes Score: 91
The Fighter stands out as one of the rare films featuring two actors nominated in the Supporting Actress category at the Oscars. Amy Adams was the odd one out, while Melissa Leo claimed an Academy Award to complement the one Christian Bale received for Best Supporting Actor. Surprisingly, Mark Wahlberg was overlooked, despite delivering one of his finest performances as Micky Ward.
This film is based on the true stories of Ward and his half-brother, Dick “Dicky” Eklund (Bale). Ward, a struggling boxer, trains under Eklund, who battles a severe drug addiction. Once a boxer himself, Eklund, along with their mother Alice Eklund-Ward (Leo), plays a pivotal role in managing Ward’s career. However, following a significant loss for Ward and Eklund’s incarceration, both brothers will face daunting challenges to reclaim their lives. Fortunately, Ward finds support in his newfound love, Charlene Fleming (Adams).
The Fighter is available for streaming on Peacock.
‘Face/Off’ (1997)
Rotten Tomatoes Score: 93
Face/Off remains as exhilarating in 2026 as it was in 1997. This film is undoubtedly director John Woo‘s crowning achievement in American cinema, with Nicolas Cage and John Travolta relishing the opportunity to play each other’s roles. Travolta portrays FBI agent Sean Archer, who harbors a deep vendetta against the terrorist Castor Troy (Cage) for the death of his son. Following a fierce confrontation, Troy is left in a coma.
To uncover a bomb that Troy has planted, Archer reluctantly agrees to assume his adversary’s identity through an elaborate facial transplant procedure. Once Troy awakens, he seizes Archer’s face, family, and life, erasing any trace of their switch. Suddenly, the hunter becomes the hunted, and Archer must find a way to convince his family that he is not who he appears to be.
Face/Off is available for streaming on Peacock.
‘Dazed and Confused’ (1993)
Rotten Tomatoes Score: 94
In his third film, director Richard Linklater struck gold by casting several future stars in Dazed and Confused. Matthew McConaughey, Ben Affleck, Milla Jovovich, Parker Posey, and numerous others appeared in this film before becoming major players in Hollywood. Set in 1976, the film depicts the final day of high school in a small, football-obsessed town.
Randall “Pink” Floyd (Jason London) is the lone player on the football team who refuses to sign a contract that restricts him from participating in activities that might jeopardize the team’s state championship chances. He also shows compassion towards a freshman, Mitch Kramer (Wiley Wiggins), who undergoes a harsh hazing ritual. Various storylines featuring different characters unfold throughout the film, but it continually returns to the separate journeys of Mitch and Pink.
Dazed and Confused is available for streaming on Peacock.
