3 Must-Watch TV Shows This April 2025
Fans of the genre have been eagerly anticipating next month, as three must-watch TV shows are set to premiere in April, featuring some of the finest sci-fi series in the entertainment industry.
This month, one of What to Watch’s top choices is the most politically charged Star Wars story to date, while our other sci-fi selection offers a more realistic anthology that mirrors our existing world.
In addition to the sci-fi offerings, HBO’s acclaimed video game adaptation returns for its second season. With Succession concluded, The Last of Us could emerge as a strong contender for the Best Drama Emmy come September.
All these series share one notable aspect: a lengthy wait between seasons. Two of our highlighted shows are expected to return, but multi-year gaps aren’t unusual. So be sure to enjoy them while they’re available.
Black Mirror (April 10)
What exactly is the Black Mirror? It’s likely your smartphone screen, which you probably have close at hand. Netflix has taken Charlie Brooker’s dark anthology sci-fi series global, and it’s not the type of show designed to leave viewers feeling optimistic about technology’s overwhelming influence in their daily lives.
Black Mirror Season 7 will include a sequel to the hit “USS Callister” episode from Season 4, featuring strong performances from Cristin Milioti, Jimmi Simpson, Michaela Coel, Billy Magnussen, and Milanka Brooks.
Details about the remaining episodes’ plots are largely undisclosed, but this season will feature guest stars like former Doctor Who actor Peter Capaldi, Deadpool and Wolverine’s Emma Corrin, Awkwafina, Issa Rae, Paul Giamatti, and more.
Catch Black Mirror on Netflix starting April 10.
The Last of Us (April 13)
How do you surpass a hit series like The Walking Dead? For starters, HBO’s adaptation of The Last of Us kept its debut season tight and engaging in 2023. Writers Craig Mazin and co-creator Neil Druckmann successfully maintained the game’s compelling narrative while enhancing it with poignant character arcs, particularly the evolving relationship between Joel (Pedro Pascal) and young Ellie (Bella Ramsey).
Season 2 jumps forward a few years, portraying a rift in Joel and Ellie’s relationship stemming from the events of the Season 1 finale. This season will partially adapt The Last of Us Part II, exploring the repercussions of Joel’s choices on both him and Ellie. While the infected remain a lurking menace, they must also contend with other survivors like Abby (Kaitlyn Dever), a new character driven by revenge.
Watch The Last of Us on HBO and Max on April 13.
Andor (April 22)
We already know the conclusion of Andor, the prequel to 2016’s Rogue One: A Star Wars Story. Nonetheless, the first season impressed in 2022 by providing perhaps the most mature perspective on the Star Wars saga yet. When Cassian Andor (Diego Luna) first appeared in Rogue One, he made a hard choice, killing an ally whose survival posed a threat to the Rebel Alliance. The inaugural season of Andor delved into Cassian’s transformation into a revolutionary spirit opposing the Empire, showcasing some of the franchise’s finest acting and storytelling.
Season 2 progresses toward the events of Rogue One, with every three episodes chronicling a year in Cassian’s life. This may explain Disney+’s decision to release three episodes each week for the final season of Andor. Although Cassian’s journey is nearing its end, upcoming episodes will bring back the beloved droid K-2SO (Alan Tudyk) and Rogue One‘s main antagonist, Orson Krennic (Ben Mendelsohn).
Catch Andor on Disney+ on April 22.
