Celebrities Respond to Sydney Sweeney’s Controversial American Eagle Advertisement
Gabby Windey, Doja Cat, President Donald Trump, and several other celebrities have expressed their varied opinions on Sydney Sweeney’s controversial American Eagle advertisement.
After Sweeney appeared in the July campaign, which cleverly played on the dual meanings of “genes” and “jeans,” the ad ignited debates among social media users who felt it promoted eugenics and overly sexualized the actress. In one segment, the camera focused on Sweeney’s cleavage as she enthusiastically discussed her genetic makeup. “My body’s composition is determined by my genes. Hey, eyes up here,” she remarked directly to the camera. A voiceover then stated, “Sydney Sweeney has great jeans.”
She also recreated a notable scene from Brooke Shields’ controversial 1980s Calvin Klein advertisement as she lounged on the ground while adjusting her denim trousers, emulating the other actress. Sweeney conveyed a message about how “genes are passed down from parents to offspring,” echoing Shields’ famous line about the significant role genes play in shaping individual traits and their transmission to future generations.
American Eagle addressed the backlash in a statement released on August 1. “‘Sydney Sweeney Has Great Jeans’ is and always has been about the jeans. Her jeans. Her story. We will continue to celebrate how everyone wears their AE jeans with confidence, in their own unique way. Great jeans look good on everyone.”
