Charli XCX’s Makeup Artist Reveals Product Recommendations and Brat Beauty Tips: Discovering the It-Factor in Makeup Artistry.
There are times when you come across a makeup artist that you immediately realize has a unique spark. It’s a feeling you can’t easily define, yet the moment you see their artistry on a red carpet or magazine cover, you recognize their exceptional talent. For us, that artist is Kali Kennedy.
If you’ve admired the makeup styles of Charli XCX, Alexa Demie, Devon Lee Carlson, or Barbie Ferreira, you’re witnessing Kennedy’s artistry. The celebrity makeup artist has mastered a maximalist and dark aesthetic: “My work feels soft with a bit of an edge,” she shares. “I strive to keep my style versatile while always staying true to my essence.”
Since Charli XCX revitalized the summer vibe with her bold style, you’ve likely seen Kennedy’s striking looks on TikTok and Instagram. We had a delightful conversation with the talented makeup artist to discuss her collaboration on Charli XCX’s Sweat tour looks, her rapid career ascent, and the products she—and Charli—can’t live without.
Kali Kennedy’s Journey in Makeup
Raised in a Southern California environment where creative careers weren’t often prioritized, Kennedy acknowledges an influential family member who recognized her talent. “My grandmother was an artist,” she recalls. “She taught me about sculpting and painting when I was younger. I always wanted a creative career involving people, but I couldn’t attend an art school or prestigious college.” It wasn’t long before she found her calling at a well-known makeup counter. “I stepped into the makeup industry through the MAC counter, just like many others. I met Ke$ha’s hairstylist shortly after, and he guided me into the freelance creative world, and I took off from there.”
The Meeting of Charli XCX and Kali Kennedy
This year, Charli XCX and Kennedy have crafted memorable looks together, but their collaboration dates back a decade. “Charli and I go way back, about 10 years,” Kennedy explains. “We collaborated on something random as newcomers in the creative space. Her energy captivated me then, and it still does now. She’s always been incredibly cool with a carefree attitude. When the brat concept emerged, her stylist reached out to me multiple times, Charli and I began communicating more, and the rest is history.”
The brat aesthetic has become iconic, with everyone embracing its beauty and fashion trends. “Charli loves a sultry, smoldering, slightly provocative look,” Kennedy reveals. “She’s the quintessential ‘hot girl.’ And there’s even more creative work from us waiting to be revealed: ‘We also did a secret project that’s still under wraps while we were in Canada,'” she adds.
Insights from the Sweat Tour
Kennedy has worked alongside the hit artist during several tour dates this year. “It was my first experience with something like that, and it was a blast. Charli, Troye, and Shy made for an iconic lineup. The theme of ‘Sweat’ was literal—the looks were designed to endure the humidity and still appear sexy once the makeup faded. Think lip stains and waterproof eyeliner.”
Kennedy shares that it usually takes her about an hour to glam Charli XCX before a show. “Matt Benns handled the hair, and we coordinated intricate details for both our areas. It was a fine balance, but he was a gem to collaborate with.”
For skin prep, Kennedy employs lymphatic drainage with a microcurrent technique for Charli XCX (and anyone frequently traveling). She uses the Pure Lift Pro Plus (for professionals) to reduce puffiness and bloating but mentions the brand also sells a consumer version, the Pure Lift Pro ($699). “I am also a big fan of the Barbara Sturm Eye Patches ($125), and Charli can’t go without her Laneige Lip Sleeping Mask ($24)—she has several on hand,” she notes.
The Creative Process
Outside of her work with Charli XCX, Kennedy has collaborated with numerous pioneering clients. “Success boils down to two key attributes: trust and taste,” she states regarding her approach. “I feel incredibly fortunate—working with an amazing group of genuine people who are simply good at heart. The creative process typically begins with a text message to discuss ideas—tapping into each other’s artistry and using a shared language is essential. We resonate with similar values and vibe.”
Her Favorite Products, Future Trends, and Wise Words
As a well-regarded beauty expert and makeup artist for some of the biggest names, Kennedy is acquainted with excellent brands and outstanding products. “I’d highly recommend the Victoria Beckham Satin Kajal Eyeliners ($34), no matter the shade,” she advises.
Even with access to virtually every beauty product available, Kennedy remains loyal to her essentials. Her favorite metal pencil sharpener—”I think it costs $5″—is a must-have, along with a fan-favorite product: “I’m probably cliché saying this, but the Make Up For Ever Artist Color Pencil in Endless Cacao ($24) is one of the most sought-after shades released in the last decade.”
As the holiday season approaches, Kennedy foresees the rise of a few beauty trends: “Expect plenty of frost or glitter applied strategically, like under the eyes (or in the inner eye corners for safety). Additionally, dark, vampy lips—either ultra-matte or high-gloss—will be in vogue,” she predicts. However, one trend she believes is definitely not brat: heavy powdered bases. “I’ve almost entirely stopped using powder. The dryness of winter doesn’t lend itself well to a completely baked face or under-eye area. I understand that could be a divisive opinion.”
For those inspired by Kennedy and interested in pursuing a career in makeup—or any artistic field—she emphasizes perseverance. “If you make mistakes, learn from them without letting them deter you. Of course, that’s easier said than done,” she reflects. “Perhaps the best advice is to seek a great therapist.”
