The Paper Season 2: Cast and Creators Address Pressing Questions

The Paper season 1 may have concluded, but what can viewers look forward to in season 2 following those cliffhangers?

The inaugural season, which debuted on Thursday, September 4, wrapped up with Ned Sampson (Domhnall Gleeson) and Mare Pritti (Chelsea Frei) finally delving into their romantic feelings. Meanwhile, Detrik (Melvin Gregg) and Nicole (Ramona Young) parted ways after a workplace situationship.

Creators Greg Daniels and Michael Koman, along with several cast members, discussed key moments from season 1 and their potential impact on season 2 during an exclusive interview with Us Weekly.

“When you release a 10-episode season each year, it differs significantly from the original Office’s structure of 25 episodes with breaks in between,” Daniels mentioned to Us prior to The Paper’s debut. “We’re contemplating whether it’s similar to book series, where the first season resembles ‘New Moon’ or ‘Twilight’, leading into the next installment. We’re just beginning our thoughts on how to approach that.”

The Paper was renewed for a second season just a day before its premiere. Read on for insights from the cast and creators about the cliffhangers from season 1:

What’s the Status of Detrik and Nicole?

Young expressed that season 1 was like an “emotional roller-coaster” for Nicole, while Gregg suggested that their characters might have fresh perspectives in season 2.

“I believe both characters will emerge from season 1 changed,” Gregg shared with Us. “Their approach in season 2 will be influenced by what they experienced in season 1.”

Will Oscar Embrace Being Filmed All the Time?

Oscar Nuñez described his character as a “pragmatist,” hinting that Oscar might undergo a transformation and begin to accept the documentary crew. “He may or may not come around,” Nuñez teased to Us. “Stay tuned. He’s stuck in that role — that’s his job — and they are documenting it, so he’ll need to make a decision.”

Will We Discover More About Adelola Beyond the Newsroom?

Gbemisola Ikumelo shared that it would be “pretty great” to delve into Adelola Olofin’s backstory outside of The Toledo Truth Teller.

“I crafted a sort of blueprint for this character, detailing her past and future, which I’d love to see explored,” Ikumelo revealed to Us. “Hopefully, we can explore that in upcoming seasons.”

Will We See More of Adam’s Relationship With His Wife?

Alex Edelman (who plays Adam Cooper) expressed a desire for more shared moments with his on-screen wife, Molly Ephraim.

“She truly shines and was wonderful to work with,” Edelman praised to Us. “She was brilliant. Hopefully, you’ll see more of her in season 2. It was a fantastic experience.”

Will More Office Alums Appear in Season 2?

The burning question is whether more familiar faces from Dunder Mifflin will make appearances in season 2 — and Daniels and Koman are keeping that under wraps.

“For this season, our emphasis was on these new characters and their narratives,” Koman stated to Us. “The future is yet to unfold.”

The Paper season 1 is now streaming on Peacock.
