Meet Chloe Malle’s Parents: Candice Bergen and Louis Malle

Chloe Malle has proudly taken on the esteemed role of American Vogue’s head of editorial content, paving her own way similar to her parents, Candice Bergen and the late Louis Malle.

Following the departure of fashion and publishing icon Anna Wintour from her role as editor-in-chief earlier this year, it’s no surprise that Chloe’s parents are both recognized as notable figures in Hollywood.

However, she made it clear that being labeled a “nepo baby” by some critics only motivated her to “work much harder,” as she expressed in an interview with The New York Times shortly after the promotion was announced on September 2, 2025.

“Fashion and media are rapidly evolving, and I am incredibly excited — and in awe — to be part of this change,” she remarked at the time, expressing her readiness to take charge. “I feel incredibly lucky to have Anna just down the hall as my mentor.”

Candice Bergen: An Emmy-Winning Star

Bergen is well-known for her iconic role on the acclaimed series Murphy Brown, where she earned five Emmys and two Golden Globes. She also gained acclaim for her performance as Shirley Schmidt on Boston Legal.

Interestingly, she portrayed a memorable character named Enid Frick in Sex and the City, a fictional Vogue editor-in-chief, appearing in three episodes throughout seasons 4, 5, and 6, as well as in the first movie released in 2008.

Fans were thrilled to see Enid return during the second season of And Just Like That.

While carving out her own path in Hollywood, Bergen also received an Oscar nomination for Best Supporting Actress for her work in the 1979 film Starting Over.

Louis Malle: A Legendary French Director

Louis was no ordinary filmmaker, earning three Oscar nominations: best writing for 1973’s Murmur of the Heart, best director for Atlantic City in 1982, and best writing for Au Revoir les Enfants in 1988.

Sadly, Louis passed away due to complications from lymphoma when Chloe was just 10 years old.

“Chloe really established a bond with her father, which hadn’t been possible before due to the separations we couldn’t avoid,” Bergen shared with NPR in 2015, referring to their residences in Los Angeles and France. “She understood she needed to care for him.”

“She did it independently, beautifully, and admirably, with both courage and humor,” the actress praised.

Candice Bergen Wished Chloe Would Arrive One Day After Louis Malle’s Birthday

Bergen revealed that Chloe was originally expected to arrive in late October, coinciding with her father’s birthday on October 30, 1932, in an excerpt from her memoir, A Fine Romance, shared on CBS News.

“Chloe was incredibly active inside — somersaulting and flipping. Then she got tangled up in the umbilical cord, upside down and feet first, posing a risk of cutting off oxygen and nutrition. It was a precarious situation,” Bergen recounted. “That was when our true bonding began.”
