Tracy Spiridakos and Jesse Lee Soffer of Chicago P.D. Make Comeback Following Upstead Split

Tracy Spiridakos and Jesse Lee Soffer are making their much-anticipated return to Chicago P.D. after their exits contributed to the surprising split between Upton and Halstead.

NBC announced on Wednesday, February 4, that Spiridakos, 37, and Soffer, 41, will reunite for the three-part One Chicago crossover event. According to the synopsis for the March 4 episode, Upton “returns to her previous domain, this time working as a Special Agent with the FBI.” She “collaborates with her old P.D. colleagues after a drug enforcement task force case from her Detroit field office brings her back to Chicago.”

Halstead, on the other hand, “took a position with the Army in Bolivia, focusing on tracking drug cartel targets.” Recently, “he’s been deep undercover, leading him toward the same case Upton is working on.”

This upcoming episode marks Soffer’s first return to the screen since his exit during season 10. The actor has returned to direct three episodes of Chicago P.D., while Spiridakos left the show in season 11.

“I made my decision at the end of my sixth season (which is considered season 10 of the series),” she shared with Variety in May 2024. “I reached out to [showrunner] Gwen [Sigan] and everyone at Wolf to inform them that I wanted to take just one more year.”

Spiridakos noted that the choice was “incredibly difficult,” adding, “I was simply curious about new opportunities and wanted a change, and that was my reasoning.”

The characters Halstead and Upton ultimately divorced due to their actors’ departures. However, following Soffer’s exit, Spiridakos shared a heartfelt message.

“It seems the word is out. Jesse, I can’t express enough how much you mean to me. Thank you for your kindness, guidance, and friendship,” Spiridakos posted on Instagram in 2022. “You’ve been the best onscreen husband a girl could wish for. I’ll miss our daily time on set. Looking forward to seeing what’s next for you. #upsteadforever.”

While Spiridakos and Soffer have sparked romance rumors, they prefer to keep their relationship status private. Spiridakos is set to star in USA Network’s Anna Pigeon.

Soffer, meanwhile, has continued in the Dick Wolf universe, landing a role as Wes on FBI: International.

“On [Chicago] P.D., Halstead accumulated a lot of emotional baggage over ten seasons,” Soffer revealed to Us Weekly in October 2024, discussing his former detective character. “He’s dealt with significant trauma.”

Soffer teased that Wes is “completely different,” exhibiting a “new demeanor” and a “fresh attitude.”

“Naturally, I have a fondness for Wolf productions; they’re very close to my heart. So to have this opportunity arise was a pleasant surprise, something I hadn’t anticipated,” he reflected. “There was no way to foresee it. No way to know.”

CBS ultimately canceled FBI: International in March after four seasons.

The One Chicago crossover event is set to air on NBC Wednesday, March 4, at 8 p.m. ET.
