Viola Davis Rocked Platform Sneakers at the 2017 Oscars
Viola Davis opted for comfort over style at the 2017 Oscars.
During a conversation with Jimmy Fallon on the Tuesday, March 10, episode of The Tonight Show, Davis, 60, revealed an intriguing detail about her outfit from that night when she won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress.
“I won an Oscar. What do you expect?” she chuckled. “But underneath that dress — I know this because I see them every time — I had on custom platform sneakers that were probably seven inches tall.”
“Seriously?!” Fallon asked, surprised. “You wore sneakers to that event?”
“Absolutely, I was wearing sneakers!” she responded, pointing at a photo of herself accepting the award. “That’s what stands out to me about that moment.”
Davis also mentioned that her Madame Tussauds wax figure wears the same stunning red dress she donned at the Oscars.
“I believe I have the best wax figure,” she remarked. “It completely freaked me out.”
Although she isn’t nominated for any Oscars this year, the A-lister expressed hopes that Sinners, featuring Michael B. Jordan, will win an award.
Davis was also present at other awards events this season, including the 2026 Actor Awards, where she awarded Jordan, 39, with the trophy for Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Leading Role. She shared with Fallon that she encountered a wardrobe malfunction during that ceremony.
Before the prestigious 2025 Golden Globe Awards recognized the year’s top films and television shows, Viola Davis received the esteemed Cecil B. DeMille Award at the Golden Gala: A Celebration of Excellence held at The Beverly Hilton in Beverly Hills, California, on January 3.
“I did rip my dress open, I did,” she disclosed. “But it’s all good!” Davis dazzled in a shimmering blue off-the-shoulder dress with a fitted bodice and an A-line pleated skirt, accessorized with a diamond necklace and coordinating rings. She completed her look with her chin-length hair styled in loose, side-parted waves.
