Major Behind-the-Scenes Shift in High Potential Season 3
High Potential will present a fresh perspective in its third season following significant behind-the-scenes changes.
Sources confirm that Nora and Lilla Zuckerman will assume roles as co-showrunners and executive producers under their overall agreement with 20th Television, the studio behind High Potential.
“We are incredibly thankful for the opportunity to work alongside Craig, Karey, Simran, and our partners at 20th and ABC as we embark on this thrilling new chapter of High Potential,” the pair stated on Wednesday, May 6. “Collaborating with Drew, Sarah, and Andrea at Goddard Textiles, along with the amazing Kaitlin Olson, is a dream come true.”
They added: “We’re excited to dive into the brilliant and bustling mind of Morgan Gillory and create intricate mysteries fitting of her genius.”
Prior to High Potential, the Zuckermans served as showrunners for the popular Peacock series Poker Face. Their writing credits also include Suits, Agents of SHIELD, Prodigal Son, and Fringe, and they are currently developing the script for Scream 8. The Zuckermans were previously linked to Hulu’s Buffy the Vampire Slayer, which ultimately did not progress.
The duo steps in following the departure of Todd Harthan, who exited the show at the conclusion of season 2. In March, it was reported that Harthan left to focus on the upcoming live-action adaptation of Christopher Paolini’s YA book series The Inheritance Cycle. This adaptation, titled Eragon, is co-created with Paolini, with Harthan serving as co-showrunner alongside Todd Helbing.
High Potential, which debuted in September 2024, was created by Drew Goddard. The pilot was penned by Goddard, who was set to executive produce alongside Sarah Esberg, Rob Thomas, Dan Etheridge, Pierre Laugier, Anthony Lancret, Jean Nainchrik, and Alethea Jones.
Rob Thomas was initially expected to serve as showrunner but exited in June 2024, just months ahead of the series premiere. Harthan was ultimately appointed as the new showrunner and also took on the role of executive producer.
The police procedural revolves around a high-potential intellectual, Morgan (Kaitlin Olson), who collaborates with the LAPD to help solve murders. Initially skeptical about Morgan’s role in the Major Crimes unit, Karadec (Daniel Sunjata) eventually comes to rely on her expertise.
The second season opened with the revelation that Morgan’s ex, Roman, is alive after being missing for over a decade. The only details Morgan—along with all of Us—learns is that her ex had worked as an FBI informant and harbors distrust for the LAPD.
“It’s going to be quite a tumultuous journey. We will start to explore some deep issues related to Morgan and Roman. There will be numerous challenges that arise with the kids at home,” Harthan exclusively teased to Us Weekly in January. “Things will get messy and intricate—hopefully in the best way possible to keep the audience on the edge of their seats.”
He added: “Our mission as we approach the latter half of the second season is to fill in significant gaps and advance various relationships. Intense developments will unfold between Steve Howey’s character and Captain Wagner, leading to intriguing dramatic twists. It’s just our usual approach to mix things up and keep the audience engaged and guessing.”
High Potential is currently available for streaming on Hulu.
