The Rookie Showrunner Addresses Chenford Twist Following Engagement

The Rookie wrapped up its eighth season with the engagement of Tim Bradford and Lucy Chen, which took an unexpected turn at the last minute.

In the episode aired on Monday, May 4, the beloved couple, known as Chenford—Tim (Eric Winter) and Lucy (Melissa O’Neill)—were enjoying their moment after Tim proposed on a secluded beach. However, their celebration was short-lived when two beachgoers approached them, administered a tranquilizer, and kidnapped them for the infamous criminal Heath Everett.

“They’re gonna be in a dungeon somewhere, whether literally or figuratively, I don’t know yet,” teased showrunner Alexi Hawley to TVLine. “But yes, it was a shining moment of joy and happiness, and then of course, I had to screw that up.”

Hawley hinted at “uncharted waters” for the couple in the upcoming season 9.

Beloved TV couples such as 9-1-1’s Buck and Eddie, The Bear’s Sydney and Carmy, and Tracker’s Colter and Reenie — or Billie — deserve to finally unite on screen in 2026. Based on Jeffery Deaver’s novel The Never Game, Tracker keeps viewers eager each week to watch their favorite fictional survivalist, Colter […]

“I played the long game with it, but we did go back and forth about whether he should be taken or she should be taken,” Hawley recalled. “Ultimately, it felt like this is a journey they’re both on together, and so it’s much more frustrating and satisfying to have them both in jeopardy together.”

While Hawley couldn’t disclose Tim and Lucy’s fate, he assured fans that their engagement is genuine, stating, “I’m going to say this, and then people are going to freak out: As long as everybody survives, there’s a wedding. We’re all very invested in them, both individually and together. The writers are equally invested in them.”

He added, “I don’t know, exactly. We haven’t started [writing season 9] yet. I haven’t really plotted out where season 9 goes. Seeing them held wherever they’re held, however they’re held, together, will be dramatic and interesting.”

The Rookie, which debuted in 2018, follows police officers from a precinct in Los Angeles. Alongside Winter and O’Neill, the cast includes Nathan Fillion, Alyssa Diaz, Richard T. Jones, Mekia Cox, Shawn Ashmore, and Jenna Dewan.

With fans cheering for Chenford for years, Hawley promised a rewarding payoff for this significant milestone.

“We’ve done many weddings on the show. We had Lopez, who went missing from her wedding a long time ago, and the Nolan and Bailey wedding that fully embraced the celebration aspect. I’m not sure — I’m always seeking a fresh approach. I’m as dedicated to their relationship as anyone, and whatever it entails would be gratifying,” he explained.

The Rookie is currently available for streaming on Hulu.
