Sister Wives Recap: Meri Brown Talks Finances and Her Child Leon
On the newest episode of Sister Wives, Meri Brown discussed the collapse of her family’s finances and asserted that it was often unfair.
“His primary argument was that I would receive two acres. Two acres,” Meri, 53, revealed to her friend Jen during the Sunday, January 19 episode of the TLC show, claiming that ex-husband Kody Brown never planned to give her an equitable portion of their family’s Coyote Pass property. “He was like, ‘Well, you don’t require as much since you don’t have as many kids.’”
Jen reminded Meri that she contributed equally to the property, located in Flagstaff, Arizona, even though she shares just one child, Leon, with Kody, 55.
“I’m not sure if they forget that when our finances were combined, the family funds I contributed went towards the kids’ education, property, and everything else,” Meri explained. “We had a family fund.”
Jen quickly reminded Meri that she not only contributed to the family finances during her marriage to Kody but that money “covered most of the kids’ college, except for Leon’s.”
Jen claimed that the family fund “paid for most of the kids’ cars, but not Leon’s,” which Meri confirmed. “I covered Leon’s college,” Meri stated, adding that she also managed her child’s “car payments” without using the family funds.
Meri admitted: “I really can’t say how much of the family fund actually went toward the education or vehicles of other kids, but I know my child’s schooling wasn’t supported by the family fund.”
Despite being married to Kody for the longest time, Meri claimed she never received an equal portion of the family finances contributed by her sister wives.
“Kody has explicitly stated, ‘Since I only have one child, I’m not entitled to an equal share of the property,’” Meri claimed, once again addressing the matter of their shared land.
Meri and Kody were legally married from 1990 to 2014 and divorced so Kody could marry his fourth wife, Robyn Brown, and legally adopt her three children from a previous relationship. Meri and Kody maintained a spiritual union until she announced their separation in January 2023.
Along with Leon, Kody has six children with Janelle Brown and Christine Brown from their respective relationships. (Janelle announced her separation in December 2022, while Christine departed from the plural family in 2021.)
Kody is still married to Robyn, 46, with whom he has three adoptive children and two biological kids.
“We had to support 18 kids. You know, that’s all past now,” Kody expressed to the cameras during Sunday’s episode regarding the asset division. “I really don’t want to go into that. Meri can complain about whatever she likes.”
While Kody seemed to dismiss Meri’s concerns, she remained firm in her belief that she is entitled to a portion of the Coyote Pass property, just as Janelle is. (Christine transferred her share of the land to Robyn and Kody following her divorce and kept the money from the sale of her Arizona home.)
“I invested a lot emotionally, financially, and personally into this marriage. I didn’t receive anything like alimony or similar support. And I’m not asking for that,” Meri concluded. “I believe it’s reasonable for me to receive the property investment. It’s only fair that I leave with that, at a minimum.”
In other moments from the episode, Kody arranged for a realtor to list Coyote Pass without informing Janelle or Meri. Meanwhile, both women hired attorneys to safeguard their rights to the land.
Sister Wives airs on TLC on Sundays at 10 p.m. ET.
