Matt Lucas Issues Apology to Millie Bobby Brown Following Jokes About Her Appearance
Comedian Matt Lucas is providing clarification after he recently referred to Millie Bobby Brown as having a “mommy makeover.”
On Monday, March 3, Lucas, 50, issued an apology statement via Instagram to Brown, 21, in response to her addressing haters—including him—who commented on her appearance.
“Dear Millie, I just saw your post and wanted to respond and provide some context. Nearly 25 years ago, I co-wrote and appeared in a sketch show called Little Britain,” he elaborated.
Lucas went on to explain: “There was a character named Vicky Pollard, who had blonde hair and always wore a pink top. In the photo, you had blonde hair and wore a pink top, so I highlighted the similarity by sharing one of her catchphrases. I thought you looked fantastic, and I was horrified when the press reported that I ‘slammed’ you—first, because that’s not my style, and second, because I think you’re amazing.”
The Bridesmaids actor emphasized that he “wouldn’t” have made his previous comments if he believed it would upset her. “I see now that it has, and for that, I apologize,” he added.
Lucas’ apology came after Brown’s social media post on the same day, where she criticized Lucas, as well as the media, for joking about her “mommy makeover look.”
“This isn’t journalism. This is bullying. The fact that adult writers are choosing to dissect my face, my body, my choices—it’s disturbing,” Brown stated in the video.
The Stranger Things star, who has also faced criticism from online trolls for claiming she was “aging poorly,” remarked: “I refuse to apologize for growing up. I will not diminish myself to meet the unrealistic expectations of those who can’t handle seeing a girl transition into a woman.”
This isn’t the first instance of Brown responding to critics about her appearance. In January, after some remarked that her selfie resembled that of a “40-year-old,” she wrote on her Instagram story: “Women grow!! Not sorry about it 🙂.”
