Abigail Spencer Shares Which Former Co-Stars She’d Like to See in Best Medicine
Abigail Spencer has built an impressive career, gathering numerous costars from various projects who could potentially guest star on her upcoming Fox series Best Medicine.
“I would absolutely love for my friend Busy Philipps to join. I think she’d be hilarious. Also, if Jen Tullock and Michael Chernus could pop over from Severance, that would be amazing,” Spencer, 44, who portrays Louisa, shared exclusively during Us Weekly’s visit to the Best Medicine set. “Anyone is welcome — including my friend Nina Dobrev.”
Spencer has already reached out to famous friends about cameo appearances.
“I’ve talked to people like, ‘Hey, would you come and hang out with us?’ They’re all like, ‘Absolutely.’ I’d love for my friend Leslie Odom Jr. to come on, although he’s currently busy with his run in Hamilton. My friends Griffin Matthews, Mike O’Malley, and Jon Cryer would also be fantastic. I could picture him swinging by, or even Donald Faison and Zach Braff.”
Best Medicine, premiering Tuesday, January 6, follows a doctor who “transitions from Boston, Massachusetts, to a small clinic in an East Coast fishing village where he vacationed as a child,” as per the official synopsis.
Josh Charles plays Dr. Martin Best, while the cast includes Spencer, Josh Segarra, Cree Cicchino, Annie Potts, Didi Conn, Clea Lewis, Stephen Spinella, Jason Veasey, Cindy De La Cruz, John DiMaggio, Carter Shimp, and a canine cast member named Wattson.
“Thanks to the way [executive producer] Liz Tuccillo has structured the show, every episode features a fantastic star who gets to do something delightful — perhaps something you’ve never seen them do before,” Spencer hinted. “What I particularly love about the show is that it creates a wonderful opportunity for some of our more seasoned actors.”
She added, “There are plenty of roles across age groups where I think, ‘Wow, we could bring so many great actors into this.’ I really loved that.”
Fox’s latest medical series is inspired by the ITV show Doc Martin, which aired from 2004 to 2022. The series was created by Dominic Minghella, who developed the character of Dr. Martin Bamford based on the 2000 film Saving Grace.
Doc Martin starred Martin Clunes, Caroline Catz, Ian McNeice, Joe Absolom, Selina Cadell, John Marquez, Eileen Atkins, and Jessica Ransom. Clunes will play the role of Martin Best‘s father, while Spencer will portray Charles’ onscreen love interest.
“Everyone adores Louisa. She’s the town’s school teacher, and I’d describe her as the town’s tempest,” she teased to Us. “Louisa has always abided by the rules, done what’s right, but she’s stirring things up by calling off her eight-year engagement with the sheriff.”
Spencer hinted that Louisa’s recent choices will be “disruptive to the town” of Port Wenn, adding, “It’s exciting to watch her make an interesting pivot in her life. It opens up space for her to possibly meet someone new.”
Best Medicine premieres on Fox Tuesday, January 6, at 8 p.m. ET.
