Alabama Toddler’s Mother Arrested on Murder Charges
The mother of a missing 2-year-old in Alabama has been charged with murdering the child and allegedly disposing of the girl’s body in a dumpster, according to police reports.
Authorities in Enterprise, Alabama, confirmed new charges in the case of missing girl Genesis Reid, stating that her mother, Adrienne Reid, has officially been charged with capital murder and abuse of a corpse.
During a press conference on Monday, March 9, Chief of the Enterprise Police Department, Michael Moore, indicated that investigators believe Genesis was intentionally killed and her body was placed in a duffle bag before being discarded in a dumpster.
The inquiry into Genesis’ disappearance commenced on February 16, when Reid reported that the toddler was missing from their apartment on Apache Drive. At that time, she informed the authorities that the child was not in her bed around 3 a.m. and that the front door was left open.
Upon further investigation, authorities found Reid’s claims to be untrue, leading to her arrest the following day. She initially faced charges of false reporting to law enforcement, classified as a Class C felony.
Moore revealed that detectives later found evidence suggesting that the child was last seen on Christmas Day, indicating she was missing for several months before her disappearance was reported.
Surveillance footage from a nearby residence purportedly captured Reid heading towards a dumpster at an apartment complex around 11:30 p.m. with a rolling duffle bag. Another video recorded two days later showed her returning to the dumpster carrying toys and other items believed to belong to Genesis.
During the press conference, Moore described the case as “heartbreaking” and pointed out that Genesis’ death has significantly affected the community.
In addition to upgrading Reid’s charges, authorities noted they are actively searching for Genesis’ remains, with their efforts focused on the Coffee County Landfill.
Coffee County Sheriff Scott Byrd mentioned that investigators have utilized truck schedules, landfill mapping, and GPS data from landfill equipment to refine their search area.
Moreover, Byrd anticipated that the search could be lengthy due to the process in which the dumpster contents were compacted in a collection truck, transferred to a distribution site, and compacted again before being sent to the landfill. He added that locating Genesis’ remains may take up to 10 weeks or more.
Authorities have sought assistance from specialists at the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children to finalize their search strategies.
Coffee County District Attorney James Tarbox indicated that Reid is expected to make her initial court appearance later this week concerning the new charges and mentioned that prosecutors are seeking the death penalty.
It remains unclear whether Reid has entered a plea or secured legal representation in this case.
Despite significant developments, police have reiterated that the investigation is ongoing as teams prepare for the landfill search.
