Amanda Knox and Ex-Raffaele Sollecito Reunite During Show on Murder Trial
Amanda Knox publicly reunited with her former partner Raffaele Sollecito at a red carpet event celebrating Hulu’s scripted show about Meredith Kercher’s murder trial.
Knox, 38, and Sollecito, 41, posed alongside the actors portraying them in The Twisted Tale of Amanda Knox — Grace Van Patten and Giuseppe De Domenico, respectively — during the premiere event on Tuesday, August 19, in New York City.
Scheduled for release on Wednesday, August 20, The Twisted Tale of Amanda Knox is an eight-episode series focused on the aftermath of Knox’s wrongful accusation, her time in prison, and her path to liberation. Initially, Margaret Qualley was set to play Knox, but she departed the project and was succeeded by Van Patten, 28.
The trial unfolded after Knox was accused in 2007 of murdering her roommate Kercher while studying abroad in Perugia, Italy. Knox received a 26-year prison sentence after both she and then-boyfriend Sollecito were convicted, even in the absence of conclusive evidence.
An appellate court acquitted the couple in 2011, but they were found guilty again three years later during a retrial. The Italian supreme court ultimately exonerated Knox in 2015, declaring her innocent of Kercher’s murder.
Ivorian migrant Rudy Guede was sentenced to 30 years in prison for Kercher’s murder in 2008 after his DNA was found at the scene. His sentence was later reduced, and he was released in November 2021.
Knox expressed her gratitude for being part of The Twisted Tale of Amanda Knox during an exclusive interview with Us Weekly.
“It ultimately comes down to whether I have a voice, and if that voice is valued in how a story is narrated. Hulu acknowledges that the subject has a valuable perspective that needs to be heard,” she told Us in March. “This project breaks the illusion that all screenwriters are objective and free from personal biases. It’s an intriguing experiment.”
Knox added: “I’m also honored to collaborate with Monica [Lewinsky], my mentor and an executive producer. While I can’t disclose much about the project since it’s still in production, it’s another chance for me to have my perspective recognized.”
The limited series draws inspiration from Knox’s memoir Free: My Search for Meaning. In the book, released in March, Knox described reuniting with Sollecito during a covert trip back to Italy with her husband, Christopher Robinson.
“Since our joint acquittal in 2011, Raffaele has traveled the world seeking a place outside Italy to settle,” she wrote. “Our lives diverged significantly since then. Raffaele was still searching for a career and a family, while I found my partner in Chris and had my beautiful daughter Eureka to brighten my days. We kept in touch occasionally via WhatsApp but weren’t particularly close, despite the unbreakable connection we still share.”
Knox reflected on her reunion with Sollecito almost two decades after the trial.
“I experienced a mix of feelings: nostalgia for what could have been, profound gratitude for how my life turned out, and sadness for Raffaele, who was still searching for things I had already found,” she shared. “It was kind of him to join me, considering the circumstances, and to reimagine this intimate moment in a familial light. He didn’t hold anything against me, despite the longing look in his eyes as he watched me with Chris and Eureka.”
Knox concluded: “I could sense that part of him was thinking about an alternate reality where Meredith was never killed, we were never arrested, we spent that day in Gubbio, and perhaps, many years later, we returned happily married with our child to revisit a place from our early romance. I was certainly imagining that too.”
New episodes of The Twisted Tale of Amanda Knox air every Wednesday on Hulu.
