Amy Schumer Discovers She Has Cushing Syndrome Thanks to Online Trolls
Amy Schumer indeed owes her diagnosis of Cushing Syndrome to the online trolls who targeted her.
In 2024, during a “Call Her Daddy” podcast episode on January 22, Schumer, 43, began discussing the backlash she faced regarding her swollen face. Initially, she dismissed the negative comments until she noticed that “doctors started chiming in in the comments.”
The actress shared, “They were saying, ‘No, no … something’s really wrong. Your face looks so strange that we believe something’s going on.’” Confused by the fact that medical professionals were seemingly trolling her, Schumer realized that these social media users suspected she had Cushing syndrome. (For those unfamiliar, Cushing syndrome is a condition characterized by elevated cortisol levels in the blood, resulting in a puffy, red, round face.)
She soon recognized that the steroid injections she was receiving to reduce scarring from her breast reduction and C-section might be responsible for her facial swelling.
“I was getting these steroid injections, and they contributed to me having this condition called Cushing syndrome; I wouldn’t have known if the internet hadn’t come for me so relentlessly,” she explained to host Alex Cooper.
Schumer went on to reveal that she received her Cushing diagnosis in February 2024, just before she began filming her movie *Kind of Pregnant*.
“I discovered that I had what’s known as ‘moon face,’ and I’m starring in a movie with a camera zoomed in on me, and I’m like, ‘Oh my God.’ I felt really down about myself before filming commenced,” she lamented.
The comedian found solace in the supportive words of her friend, director Lorraine Caffery, who encouraged her by saying: “You know what, I think you look f—ing great.”
“I just required one person to lift my spirits,” Schumer mentioned.
Currently, Schumer’s swelling has nearly vanished as her body has naturally expelled the excess fluid. Take that, internet trolls.
