Andi Dorfman recently took to social media to share insights about why her newborn daughter, Harper, is being “exclusively formula-fed.”

At 37, Dorfman welcomed her first child with husband Blaine Hart on December 20, 2024, and provided a candid update regarding her feeding choices through a series of Instagram Stories on Thursday, January 9.

After receiving numerous DMs from fans inquiring whether she was breastfeeding, the former Bachelorette opened up about her journey.

“First off, my sister and I were both formula-fed babies, so it was always part of my plan,” Dorfman stated. “I intended to use a breast pump to provide her with breast milk, as that would help me monitor how much she was getting.”

However, Dorfman explained that an unforeseen NICU stay for her baby, during which Harper received formula, changed her initial plans.

“In the hospital, I attempted to pump, but my milk hadn’t come in yet,” Dorfman explained. “Harper was doing really well on the formula, so we took a lot of it home from the hospital. I did try to pump a few times when we got back, but my milk still hadn’t arrived.”

Having married Hart in Italy in May 2023, Dorfman mentioned she attempted to pump “one or two more times” but still couldn’t produce any milk.

“The strange thing is, I never experienced any pain,” Dorfman added. “I didn’t go through engorgement or any of those side effects commonly associated with stopping breastfeeding. It almost felt like I skipped that phase entirely. I’m not sure if my milk supply just never came in or if I missed the opportunity, or if it was simply fate having its own plans. But here we are.”

Dorfman underwent a “quick/safe procedure” at the hospital less than a week postpartum. “Welp, we’re back! This time for Mama (minor setback and need a quick/safe procedure) but got a quick snuggle with this little nugget first,” she shared via Instagram Story on December 28, alongside a hospital selfie with Harper.

Dorfman noted that Harper is flourishing as she approaches her one-month milestone. “I hope this story resonates with someone,” she expressed. “I don’t understand the judgment and stigma surrounding breastfeeding versus formula feeding or choosing not to do either. But that’s my journey, and I’m standing by it.”

The new mom first appeared on Juan Pablo Galavis‘ season 18 of The Bachelor in 2014, later becoming the Bachelorette. During her season, Dorfman got engaged to Josh Murray but broke up with him shortly after.
