Andy Samberg Responds to Seth Meyers’ Dog Passing After Their Feud
For many of us who are frequently online, Andy Samberg immediately came to mind when Seth Meyers shared the sad news of his dog, Frisbee’s, passing.
Earlier this month, Meyers, 51, revealed that his cherished Italian greyhound, Frisbee, passed away at the age of 14. During the episode on Tuesday, August 26, of “The Lonely Island and Seth Meyers Podcast,” cohosts Samberg, 47, Jorma Taccone, and Akiva Schaffer inquired about how he was handling it.
“Frisbee has passed away, and it is indeed very sad,” began the Late Night With Seth Meyers host. “As sad as it is, it’s equally amusing that several major news outlets wrote articles mentioning how she was Andy’s archenemy. My kids kept asking, ‘What’s this about?’ I told them, ‘It’s another article discussing your dog’s passing.’”
Samberg humorously remarked, “Never did I imagine I would be so closely associated with Frisbee’s passing or that good ol’ Fris would receive this much attention. I mean, is Frisbee breaking the internet?”
Meyers acknowledged that his dog indeed caused quite the stir online “to some extent.” He further mentioned that Frisbee “was valued for more than just Andy’s complete dislike for her.”
If you missed it, the years-long rivalry between Samberg and Meyers’ dog has been well-chronicled, with fans creating TikTok compilations capturing every instance of Samberg expressing his disapproval of Frisbee. Last month, Meyers even got mutual friend Amy Poehler involved in the joke, convincing her to prank Samberg with the (then-fake) news of Frisbee’s death on her “Good Hang” podcast. Meyers officially announced Frisbee’s (real) passing via Instagram on August 19—just a day after Samberg’s birthday.
“The timing of the news around my birthday didn’t make things any easier,” Samberg joked on Tuesday. “You know, I wrestled with how to address this. At one point, I thought, ‘This is trending; it’s like Chris Rock waiting to talk about the slap until he gets compensated.’ You know what I mean?”
Samberg later admitted he learned of Frisbee’s passing before the Instagram announcement, maintaining he responded appropriately. “It was precisely what you’d expect from a friend,” Meyers concurred. “I too reached out, saying, ‘Well, the awkward moment has finally come.’”
Meyers expressed pride in how his friend maintained the humor throughout the ordeal. “I’ve been hinting for about a year that she wouldn’t live forever, and we were in her final year, yet you never wavered,” he added, with Samberg joking that abandoning the feud would have been “disrespectful to her in many ways.”
The Hot Rod actor did put aside the animosity briefly to check on Meyers’ kids. “Once I confirmed everything was okay, I did respond with a few possibly mean comments,” Samberg said, noting their continued text exchange where they discussed the sadness and undeniable humor of having to have that conversation.
When asked if thoughts of getting “another one of those creatures” had crossed his mind, Meyers hesitated. “I think there’s going to be a lengthy break,” he responded.
The Lonely Island trio pondered the idea of cloning Frisbee. “I will admit, we dug a hole and buried her, so I know where she is,” Meyers quipped. “By the way, I loved Frisbee very much. I never thought, ‘I need to get one just like this.’”
Despite his loss, there was a silver lining for Meyers upon seeing the widespread coverage regarding Frisbee’s passing. “It brought me joy and laughter that her legacy was that my friend disliked her for 14 years,” he expressed. “It also made me realize how long Andy and I have been friends.”
Samberg confessed his feelings were “mixed up,” clarifying, “My affection for you and your family is now intertwined with my disdain for the dog.”
For their friend and former Saturday Night Live producer Mike Shoemaker, there’s only one fitting way to honor Frisbee. “[He] suggested Frisbee should definitely be included in the Emmys In Memoriam,” Meyers disclosed. “But Andy wisely pointed out that it would be worse to forget a well-known sitcom director while including Seth’s dog.”
