Anthony Hill from Grey’s Anatomy Shares Insights on Ellen Pompeo’s Medical Scene (Exclusive)
In the most recent episode of Grey’s Anatomy, Meredith and Winston clashed in the OR, marking a significant professional achievement for actor Anthony Hill.
“Collaborating with Ellen [Pompeo] on a show where she is the lead — not just exchanging pleasantries in the hallway, but engaging in a medical case with contrasting approaches — was exhilarating for me,” Hill, 37, shared exclusively with Us Weekly prior to the episode airing on Thursday, October 23. “It was intriguing.”
In Thursday’s episode, Meredith Grey (Pompeo), Nick Marsh (Scott Speedman), and Winston Ndugu (Hill) teamed up for a challenging transplant surgery, where two parents provided lung tissue for their chronically ill child. Winston approached the living donor transplant with caution, countering Meredith and Nick’s more adventurous attitudes.
“Our interactions added a dynamic element, and it was a challenge for me,” Hill continued speaking with Us about sharing the screen with the 55-year-old Pompeo. “That type of scene is what I enjoy, and working alongside Ellen is a rite of passage I hadn’t yet experienced in a medical context. It’s been a pleasure.”
Hill mentioned that filming alongside Speedman, 50, was equally enjoyable. (Speedman’s Nick is Meredith’s romantic interest, and both frequently travel from their new home in Boston to assist at Seattle’s Grey Sloan Memorial with complex cases.)
“I have a great admiration for them as both actors and characters,” said Hill. “Immersing myself in a medical narrative with such depth is an irreplaceable opportunity. That’s the real gem of this show.”
Hill joined Grey’s Anatomy in season 16 as Maggie Pierce’s (Kelly McCreary) love interest.
“When I joined, I honestly wasn’t sure how much longer the show would run. With 17 seasons behind us, it’s hard to predict how many more stories they can craft,” Hill recounted to Us. “However, the writers continually find fresh and innovative ways to connect with contemporary issues.”
He added, “I’m always prepared for anything, which is essential as they draw from current events and real medical scenarios. It’s consistently fresh and relevant, often containing shock elements that viewers might assume are fictional, but they’re very real. That’s part of what makes Shonda Rhimes‘s medical drama so brilliant, as so many stories are possible within it.”
Winston has grown from being Maggie’s love interest into a prominent character in his own right. (Winston and Maggie divorced in season 20, prior to McCreary’s exit from the show.)
“[Winston is] no longer just a doctor and a romantic interest; we’re beginning to see more dimensions to his character, allowing us to understand his motivations,” Hill remarked. “It’s been enjoyable to evolve and delve deeper into his character, presenting a constant yet entertaining challenge for me.”
Grey’s Anatomy airs on ABC Thursdays at 10 p.m. ET.
