Apple Martin on Borrowing Her Mom Gwyneth Paltrow’s Clothes and Other Adventures
Apple Martin, the daughter of Gwyneth Paltrow and Chris Martin, is embracing her individuality and showing a keen interest in creating her own identity. However, her favorite hobby remains “borrowing” clothes from her mom’s wardrobe.
In a candid conversation with Interview Magazine Editor-in-Chief Mel Ottenberg, published on April 2, Apple, now 20, shared insights about her college experience (“a bit stressful” but with “great vibes”) and her ambitions for a pre-law career (“I’ll just channel Elle Woods”) alongside her developing fashion style.
On the style front, the former Interview Magazine summer intern acknowledges that her fashion sense is still taking shape. Her typical outfit consists of timeless essentials: “Doc Martens — my red Oxfords, jeans, a white T-shirt and a jacket,” she conveyed to Ottenberg. Nevertheless, similar to her renowned mother, she possesses an affinity for big fashion moments. “Fun and fabulous stuff,” is how Martin describes it.
“I feel like my style isn’t fully realized yet, but I’m gradually diving deeper into it,” she explained. Her summer 2024 internship at Interview was pivotal for her fashion evolution, as was the magazine feature that marked her first interview and photoshoot experience.
“Honestly, the Interview shoot made me think, ‘Oh my God, I need to start having more fun [with fashion] and not be afraid,’” she remarked. The photoshoot itself highlighted her versatile fashion sense, showcasing a blend of collegiate-chic items, such as a Celine pleated miniskirt and block-heeled Thom Browne loafers, alongside a glamorous Valentino furry coat and current officewear trends, similar to the Saint Laurent suit favored by It Girls like Hailey Bieber and Elle Fanning.
Her preferred “shopping” destination is her mother’s closet, which Martin described as well-organized and accessible. “She allows me to take things because she’s like, ‘I saved it all so you could have it,’” she mentioned. “My absolute favorite pieces are her old Calvin Klein from the ’90s. I have quite a few, and they are the best thing ever. Entering her archive closet is pure bliss.”
Martin reflected on a particular nostalgic outfit of her mother’s that she (and countless Pinterest users) still adores. “She wore a cheetah print coat — hair clips, sunglasses, and some stylish wedged sandals. I just love that.” Aside from her mother, Martin looks up to Jane Birkin as a style influence, admiring her “cute little babydoll dresses,” but for everyday wear, she often draws inspiration from the ’90s supermodel aesthetic.

For her beauty routine, Martin leans towards a more daring style. “I want vibrant eyeshadow and bold clothing,” she stated. “A subtle light blue matte eyeshadow paired with fun ’60s-inspired downturned eyeliner would be amazing.”
Ottenberg encouraged her to try this look when she went out with friends that evening, but the undergraduate is more likely to explore vivid makeup when she’s dressing in a “low-pro” style, as Ottenberg described her intern look. “If you’re in jeans and a T-shirt but have something fun happening on your face, it becomes uniquely yours,” she explained.

Without a doubt, we can expect to see more of Martin, whether sitting in the front row at Chanel (once more) or gracing the cover of another magazine. After all, even her cinematic role model, Legally Blonde’s Elle Woods, played by Reese Witherspoon, was a fashion aficionado known for her vibrant colors.
