Bel-Air Showrunner Hints at Satisfying Series Finale and Possible Spinoff
Although Bel-Air is wrapping up, the Fresh Prince of Bel-Air universe is far from finished.
At the NBCUniversal Backlot Summer Experience on August 4, showrunner Carla Banks-Waddles hinted at what fans can anticipate in the fourth and final season, stating to Us Weekly and other reporters, “It will feel like an ending but also a beginning. I can confirm it’s going to be senior year, with Will and Carlton stepping into that chapter.”
Banks-Waddles described this finale as “a four-year journey.”
“It feels like graduation is upon us. But each character will be moving on to the next act in their lives, and you’ll witness that growth through their individual stories,” she elaborated. “So, it will convey both an ending and a promising beginning for what lies ahead for everyone.”
While Banks-Waddles and the cast refrained from commenting on any potential spinoff plans, they certainly did not dismiss the idea.
“Reading those final episodes has shown me the unprecedented care each character has received,” remarked Olly Sholotan, who portrays Carlton. “It was genuinely beautiful for our cast to absorb Carla’s carefully crafted words regarding each character’s last moments.”
Lisa Katz, President of Scripted Content at NBC Universal Entertainment, provided insights from the production perspective, commenting, “Our current focus is on delivering a final season that is very intentional and deeply satisfying for the audience. Naturally, we recognize the potential directions for the characters post-series.”
Katz added: “We understand there are numerous narratives we could explore, thus we remain open to investigating those possibilities as we bring the main story to a close.”
Bel-Air, which debuted on Peacock in 2022, reinvents the beloved sitcom The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air, originally inspired by Morgan Cooper’s short fan film of the same name. The series chronicles Will Smith’s (Jabari Banks) tumultuous path from the streets of West Philadelphia to the luxurious estates of Bel-Air.
Alongside Banks and Sholotan, Bel-Air features talents such as Cassandra Freeman, Jimmy Akingbola, Coco Jones, Akira Akbar, Simone Joy Jones, Jordan L. Jones, and Adrian Holmes.
“Bel-Air possesses many unique qualities. Firstly, it’s rooted in an iconic series that evokes nostalgia and admiration,” Katz remarked. “Speaking to Morgan Cooper’s visionary reimagining, it’s remarkable how timely the story feels for a revisit. Coupled with the exceptional storytelling from Carla and her team, alongside this remarkable cast, it’s truly a special project that we’re excited to present as a flagship series for our platform.”
Bel-Air is currently available to stream on Peacock.
