Below Deck Med’s Joe Stands Up for Captain Sandy Against ‘Unprofessional’ Criticism
Below Deck Med‘s Joe Bradley is back and already defending Captain Sandy Yawn from some rude comments.
Upon his return in season 10, Joe had an exclusive chat with Us Weekly about working alongside Nathan Gallagher again — hinting at surprises for Bravo viewers in upcoming episodes — and reflecting on what he learned from his previous love triangle with Bri Muller and Elena Dubaich:
How did it feel to get the call from Captain Sandy?
I hadn’t really considered joining a new season again; I was just focusing on myself and striving to improve every day. Now that I work on yachts, that’s my career. When Captain Sandy called me and said, “Joe, I really need you,” I immediately asked, “What bridge do I need to be at?” It felt overwhelming in a good way to know that Captain Sandy wanted me back on deck.
Were there things you wanted to change from last season?
Last season was only my second boat experience, and I was promoted to lead deck without much leadership experience. Now, I feel ready for the role of bosun.
I learn every day, month, and year. I’m evolving professionally. Obviously, I’m not perfect, and I’ll make some mistakes, but those are part of my growth.
Can we expect to see you as bosun next season on Below Deck Med?
I’m a bosun now, but that’s my aspiration.
Regarding your friendship with Nathan, did you approach your role differently on deck with him as your boss?
He’s in charge, so I respect his position. I don’t want to step on any toes; I’m here to support a dear friend while respecting the professional hierarchy. I wasn’t nervous at all; I just want to be there for him.
How did it feel to see him as bosun?
It was great. Watching someone grow is a blessing. This is his first bosun role, and we all have room for improvement, don’t we? I appreciated having his back.
Last season, you were lead deckhand, but this year Max [Salvador] is designated for that role. How do you collaborate?
We make a strong team. Nathan is the bosun, and there could be a potential lead deckhand. Who will it be? You’ll see!
We still have an open spot on the deck team. How will that be filled?
What I can share is that the open position gets filled well, and they do an excellent job.
What’s your take on the deckhands who left? Tessa [Budd] did say “f*** her” to Captain Sandy during advice. What’s your opinion on that?
I think that’s utterly unprofessional. If you’ve been let go, it’s essential to take it gracefully without throwing insults. Decisions are made for the benefit of the team. I haven’t worked with those guys; I came in to replace them. From what I’ve seen, there’s no need for aggression in our work environment.
You mentioned avoiding romance last season, yet you quickly met two girls who caught your interest. When do you think you’ll explore that? Will you explore it?
Based on last season, you can get the idea.
What did you take away from your love triangle last season?
Honestly, I learned absolutely nothing.
Are you still in touch with Bri or Elena?
They’re aware of my status. I’m single, and if they’re open to some fun, chaos can ensue. At the end of the day, I’m friends with both Elena and Bri. We’re young and in close quarters, so interactions are natural. I maintain contact without any bad intentions.
Would you say you’re handling romance better this season compared to last?
To answer without cracking a smile, it was simply chaotic.
What’s been the best part of having Nathan as your boss? Is there anything he could improve on?
Having Nathan as my boss has been a pleasure to witness his growth. However, there’s definitely a noticeable difference in him this season — with a bit more organization, things could flow better.
We see Gael [Cameron] returning in the trailer. What’s the story there?
When I returned, Nathan definitely had strong feelings for Gael. I think it’s a blessing that they’ve rekindled their relationship; their love is something to admire. The arrival of their baby is a remarkable gift, and I couldn’t be happier for them.
What’s it like seeing him as a dad?
I haven’t met his baby yet, but from what I’ve seen online, the baby looks gorgeous. I’ve tried to reach out to Nathan, but he’s busy being a dad — and possibly on a boat. We’re not very active socially, but I’ve seen the baby’s pictures, and I can’t wait to meet.
How was it to have Sandy as your boss again?
She’s an outstanding leader and a wonderful person whom I look up to both professionally and personally.
Are there any misconceptions about this season?
I’ve seen some comments, and I must say, the trailer is just a glimpse. It’s a tease of what happens this season, and I promise it’s chaotic, unforgettable, and genuinely wild; the trailer doesn’t capture its essence.
What can you hint at regarding future episodes?
What I can share is that it’s all chaos and drama. It doesn’t focus on just one group — every one of us on this boat faces challenges. This season feels like a total reset from last year.
