Boston Blue EPs Hint at Blue Bloods Cameos and Discuss Jack’s Mention Following Recast
The midseason finale of Boston Blue finally acknowledged Tony Terraciano‘s character, Jack Reagan. The question remains: could he be one of the upcoming Blue Bloods cameos after Donnie Wahlberg‘s other onscreen son was recently recast?
In the episode that aired on Friday, December 19, Danny (Wahlberg) mentioned that Jack was volunteering with Doctors Without Borders in Africa, a reference to Terraciano, 25, who is attending medical school to obtain his Doctor of Medicine.
“It’s important to us to keep the universe alive. We are an expansion of the Blue Bloods universe, and we take that very seriously,” executive producer Brandon Sonnier told Us Weekly about the subtle reference to Jack. “We want to check in on the family members. Their lives should feel like they’re evolving beyond what we see on Boston Blue.”
He elaborated, “It’s crucial for us to keep track of everyone’s journey and hopefully, we can drop in and visit them in the future.”
Viewers have witnessed Jack and Sean (Andrew Terraciano) grow up, so their surprise was palpable when CBS announced the Boston Blue spinoff, which centers on Danny’s relationship with his youngest child—though with a twist. Before Blue Bloods premiered in October, the role of Sean was recast, with newcomer Mika Amonsen.
Executive producer Brandon Margolis discussed the potential of involving Andrew in the spinoff, possibly linking to his Blue Bloods roots.
“I love that idea. It’s really clever, and I think Donnie would probably appreciate it as well,” he shared with Us. “He’s often looking to weave in New Kids on the Block references. If the right opportunities arise, we’re always open to great ideas.”
The showrunners also considered ways to bring Jack to the screen, even contemplating recasting the role.
“Is there a chance? Yes, there is a chance,” Sonnier said. “We can confirm that other family members will be joining us in the latter half of the season. We are continuously discussing arcs, how to pay homage, and how to expand the universe. As fans of Blue Bloods, any opportunity to immerse ourselves in the universe and include the Reagans is a chance we eagerly take.”
Alongside the Reagans, Boston Blue follows the Silver family, featuring Marcus Scribner as Jonah, Gloria Reuben as Jonah’s mother Mae, Ernie Hudson as Jonah’s grandfather, Sonequa Martin-Green as Jonah’s sister, and Maggie Lawson as his stepsister, Sarah.
The midseason finale depicted Mae facing backlash for investigating a corrupt district attorney, which put all his cases under scrutiny. Consequently, the murder case of her late husband, Ben, was reopened, resulting in his killer being set free.
Jonah struggled with this turn of events and spent the majority of the episode pursuing his father’s murderer. The episode concluded with Jonah following the killer into a building, leading to Danny and Lena (Martin-Green) bursting in after hearing a gunshot and discovering the killer dead, with Jonah covered in blood.
“The most captivating stories to explore in that format are the emotional ones. Thus, it made the most sense to delve into the grief surrounding their father, a recurring theme for the Silver family,” Margolis noted to Us. “Since the pilot, it has been a focal point for us as storytellers, providing the emotional depth needed to carry into the second half of the season. It was a fantastic opportunity to craft something for Jonah’s character, showcasing Marcus’s exceptional acting skills, particularly in dramatic scenes.”
Sonnier hinted at how Jonah’s apparent accusation of murder will unfold.
“We delve into the police procedures, focused on the family rallying around Jonah to uncover the truth behind this crime. It’s essential to piece together not only what happened but also the motivations behind it, especially regarding the larger crime involving the murder of the Silver family’s former patriarch,” he elaborated. “This is an intense ordeal for Danny, Sean, Lena, Sarah, Mae, and the rest of the family as they try to support Jonah amidst his actions.”
Boston Blue, which has been renewed for a second season, aims to dive deeper into emotional cliffhangers spanning seasons, according to Margolis. “We’re exploring emotional threads rather than solely procedural ones. The richness of these characters and their complex backstories offer countless thrilling opportunities.”
Boston Blue will return to CBS on Friday, February 27, at 10 p.m. ET, with new episodes available for streaming the following day on Paramount+.
