Broncos QB Bo Nix Calls Out Coach Sean Payton Over Injury Remarks
Denver Broncos quarterback Bo Nix aims to set the record straight after his head coach, Sean Payton, remarked that he was “predisposed” to ankle injuries following the one he sustained during the divisional round of the NFL Playoffs.
“There’s nothing predisposed or anything that was previously there,” Nix, 25, stated during a conference call on Wednesday, January 28. “I think that got misunderstood. It was just a simple step while my foot was up in the air, and my body weight came down on it, causing it to twist up.”
Nix added, “I don’t think he should disclose how many surgeries I’ve had in the past, to be honest — he doesn’t have that information. But it’s good to get back to work. … There’s nothing concerning or frightening for me moving forward.”
Nix’s remarks followed Payton, 62, commenting during a press conference on Wednesday, January 28, that Nix’s recent surgery revealed that an injury was unavoidable.
“What was discovered was a condition that was predisposed — they typically find a bit more when they operate,” Payton explained. “It wasn’t a question of if, but rather when. In assessing the play, the operating surgeon indicated this was going to happen sooner rather than later.”
Nix’s injury occurred during the final drive of the Broncos’ 33-30 triumph over the Buffalo Bills on January 17, just before Wil Lutz kicked a 23-yard field goal to secure the win.
Approximately an hour after the game, Payton announced that Nix would be out for the remainder of the season.
“We celebrate the season for him,” he stated at the time. “And you know, the city is ready, and we’ll be prepared for the next challenge.”
Payton elaborated, “I’ll tell you one thing. He’s a strong, faith-centered individual. He was sitting in the hallway with his family, and I went to talk to him. He believes that God has a plan for him. He mentioned having one in high school and one at Auburn. I joked, ‘If I had known that, I wouldn’t have picked you.’”
Following the injury, Bo’s wife, Izzy Nix, posted a photo on her Instagram Story showing her husband sitting on the floor after the game, leg extended, still in his uniform and pads.
“The joy, followed by the heartbreak, and then watching each teammate and coach come over to sit by Bo’s side,” Izzy captioned the photo. “God could have placed us anywhere, and I’m so thankful He chose Denver. He is the perfect Author of Bo’s story, and we can’t wait to see what He has planned for this team — We’ll be in the front row, cheering the loudest!”
The Broncos’ victory propelled them into the AFC Championship game, where they lost 10-7 to the New England Patriots on Sunday, January 25. The Patriots moved on to the Super Bowl, set to face the Seattle Seahawks on February 8.
