Brooklyn Beckham Says Parents ‘Pressured’ Him to Relinquish Name Rights
Brooklyn Beckham has made a bold statement, comprising several allegations against his renowned parents, David Beckham and Victoria Beckham. One major claim is that they attempted to “bribe” him into relinquishing the rights to his name before he exchanged vows with wife Nicola Peltz Beckham.
“In the weeks leading up to our wedding, my parents persistently pressured and tried to bribe me into giving up the rights to my name, which would have impacted me, my wife, and our future children,” Brooklyn, 26, asserted in his social media statement shared on Instagram Stories on Monday, January 19.
“They were insistent on me signing before the wedding day because then the terms of the deal would kick in,” he continued in his post. “My reluctance affected their payment, and they’ve treated me differently ever since. During the wedding planning, my mum even called me ‘evil’ because Nicola and I chose to have my Nanny Sandra and Nicola’s Naunni at our table, as they both lost their husbands. Both sets of parents had their own tables nearby.”
Us Weekly has reached out to representatives for David and Victoria for a response.
While Brooklyn didn’t provide further details, he was likely referencing what is widely known as “NIL” rights, or the “right of publicity.” These rights allow individuals to control and profit from the commercial usage of their name, image, likeness, and other personal traits.
Such rights are often essential for public figures, including athletes, celebrities, and social media influencers. However, anyone has the right to assert their identity should it be utilized without their consent.
According to the Montana law firm Worden Thane P.C., NIL rights can encompass a person’s name, nicknames, any previous names, image, likeness, voice, and even their signature. Even unique gestures or phrases associated with a person can fall under their NIL rights, according to the law firm.
In the same social media post, Brooklyn confirmed that he does “not wish to reconcile with my family” amid their ongoing dispute. (David and Victoria are also the parents of sons Romeo, 23, and Cruz, 20, and daughter Harper, 14.)
“I’m not being controlled,” he stated. “I’m standing up for myself for the first time in my life.”
The chef went on to add, “My parents have manipulated narratives in the media concerning our family throughout my life. The staged social media posts, family functions, and superficial relationships have been a constant in the life I was born into. Lately, I’ve witnessed the lengths they will go to, to spread numerous falsehoods in the media, often at the expense of innocent people, to maintain their own facade. But I trust that the truth will eventually surface.”
The estranged Beckham also criticized his parents for allegedly trying to “sabotage my relationship since before my wedding,” claiming their actions have not “let up.”
Brooklyn further stated that his mother declined to design his then-fiancée’s wedding dress at the last minute, forcing Nicola to seek an alternative gown prior to their wedding. He also accused his mother of “inappropriately” dancing with him during what he says was meant to be his and Nicola’s “romantic” wedding dance.
