Brothel Manager Shares Insights on Lamar Odom’s Overdose Incident
Former brothel manager Richard Hunter shared exclusive details about Lamar Odom‘s near-fatal overdose that resulted in six heart attacks and 12 strokes.
In Netflix’s Untold: The Death & Life of Lamar Odom, which debuted on Tuesday, March 31, Hunter reflected on his time at the Love Ranch near Las Vegas, recalling how he learned that Odom, now 46, intended to visit in 2015 during his divorce from Khloé Kardashian.
“His aides or someone actually reached out to the brothel and requested transportation. It became very real when he provided them with his location,” Hunter recounted. “The car went to pick him up.”
Hunter was present at the brothel during the morning of Odom’s health emergency.
“It was early Monday or Tuesday. It was an unusually slow day. The Love Ranch had a separate house behind the main building. If clients spent enough, we’d accommodate them there — and I knew Lamar was inside,” he mentioned. “He had been there for the last two days. I was at my desk working when one of the girls with him burst into my office, panicking.”
The room was “completely dark” when Hunter rushed in to assist. He noted that Odom was snoring “heavily,” which made him suspicious that “something was wrong” with the athlete.
“I was explaining to the [911] operator what was happening,” he said. “When I turned him on his side, he just expelled. Fluid began to pour from his mouth. He had told one of the girls that he had done some cocaine before arriving at the brothel — that would have been two days ago.”
Hunter continued: “The girl with him said, ‘He also took these,’ showing me a packet [of sex enhancement pills]. I asked how many he had taken, and she replied probably 12. I glanced at the package, which stated, ‘Do not exceed one every 24 hours.’”
The manager assisted three EMTs in carrying the 6-foot-10 Odom out, explaining, “Due to his size, they couldn’t get him onto a stretcher. So, we lifted the fitted sheet he was on off the bed, each of the three men took a corner, and I took the fourth. We carried him out of the suite, and when the sunlight hit his face, I had the corner near his head. Looking down at him, I thought, ‘This guy may be dead.’”
Odom — who battled substance abuse for years — was left comatose following the overdose at the legal brothel in Crystal, Nevada. In the aftermath, Odom fought to regain his ability to walk and talk, while the Love Ranch owner, Dennis Hof, leveraged the incident for publicity. (Hof passed away on the property in 2018 at age 72.)
Latter in the documentary, Hunter recounted a bidding war for items related to Odom’s near-death experience.
“They wanted the receipt that Lamar signed for a $75,000 tab. They also sought the footage,” he revealed. “A bidding war erupted. Dennis ended up giving it to the Today show. The deal was made, and [then-host] Matt Lauer announced, ‘Joining us now is the owner of the Love Ranch and the author of The Art of the Pimp, available in bookstores everywhere.’ If I didn’t realize it before, I certainly did afterward. When it came to our willingness to attract publicity, there were no limits.”
