Caleb Foote from NCIS: Origins Discusses ‘Jacked’ Randy and Unveiling on the Show
NCIS: Origins enthusiasts were stunned when they caught a glimpse of Randy’s impressive physique in season 1 — and actor Caleb Foote assures there’s more to come.
“You’re referring to the iconic episode 8,” Foote, 32, who portrays NIS agent Bernard “Randy” Randolph, shared exclusively with Us Weekly during a set visit on Wednesday, February 25.
The actor mentioned that “there’s not a lot of pressure” to remain fit after fans saw his toned arms, legs, and abs in season 1, episode 8.
In that memorable scene, Randy sported a tank top that revealed his muscles while staying in a rundown motel with partner Leroy Jethro Gibbs (Austin Stowell) during a protective detail. When alarms blared in the hotel, Randy quickly put on pants and engaged in a fight in the stairwell, showcasing his fit physique once again.
“In a way, it felt liberating and gave me the green light to be who I am,” Foote conveyed to Us while in a hair and makeup trailer.
He recalled that when he auditioned for the role of Randy — the endearing redhead known for making friends at the NIS’ San Diego office — the character was described as “the most vanilla guy you’ve ever met,” adding that he was “a bit of a nerd.”
However, Foote was already quite “muscular” when he got the role. “My body mass index was pretty low. I’m a jacked guy,” he said with a laugh.
“When I was cast as Randy, a nerd, but also jacked, it was fantastic that they let me embrace that,” he noted.
Foote remembered early in production wearing a “cut-off tee,” with his co-star Mariel Molino, who plays Lala Dominguez, being supportive before mentioning to their showrunner just how fit he was.
“She asked, ‘Is he supposed to be this ripped?’ and David, our showrunner, replied, ‘It’s visual media; hell yes, let him be jacked!’” Foote chuckled.
Now that both fans and the cast are fully on board with Randy’s attractive traits, they’re eager for more — and Foote is ready to deliver.
“Oh, oh, it’s coming. It’s on the way,” Foote told Us when inquired if viewers would see Randy getting “stripped down on screen.”
He teased, “We got a season 3, so it’s definitely happening.” Foote chuckled again, saying, “Hey, I’ve worked my whole life, and now I get to showcase my strength on television. I mean, why not?”
While Foote was vague on specifics about what fans can expect when Randy removes his usual long-sleeved shirt during work, he did share a Us behind-the-scenes gym session with Stowell, 41, and Kyle Schmid.
During their workout on various machines, the trio divulged some secrets for staying in shape for the show, including Schmid’s declaration that he avoids McDonald’s fast food.
“No, no, no, you’ve gotta maintain that lifestyle. Dunkin’ Donuts. Load up on carbs. Just don’t cut anything else; train harder instead,” Stowell added.
Foote chimed in, “That’s a solid point. If you work out hard, your diet becomes less significant.”
He admitted, “During off-seasons, we really bulk up. I [returned] with 10 pounds of muscle.”
Regardless of his physique, Foote expressed to Us how grateful he is to portray such an adored character.
“It’s fantastic because typically it’s just my family and relatives who appreciate my work,” he chuckled. “So receiving recognition from others is truly rewarding.”
Foote emphasized that Randy plays the role of “keeping that light alive amidst all the darkness” as the “goofier” special agent.
NCIS: Origins is set to return to CBS on Tuesday, March 3, at 9 p.m. ET.
