Cameron Diaz Shares That She’s “Just Trying to Survive Like Every Other Mom”
Cameron Diaz opened up about what she has been up to during her 10-year break from acting — with parenting taking center stage.
“I wasn’t maintaining any sort of training,” said Diaz, 52, in behind-the-scenes footage from Netflix’s Back in Action shared on Wednesday, January 15. “I turned down everything and kept a low profile.”
The actress — whose first film in a decade is set to premiere on Netflix on Friday, January 17 — also mentioned that she started her wine brand, Avaline, during her break from the film industry.
“That was where I focused most of my energy,” Diaz explained. “Aside from simply being a mother and managing my day-to-day life.”
The mother of two admitted, “That was pretty much my reality. Just like any other mom, I’m just trying to survive. I’m just trying to keep everything on track.”
Diaz had a highly successful career, featuring in 38 films over 20 years, before stepping back after the releases of The Other Woman, Sex Tape, and Annie in 2014.
In the following year, the Charlie’s Angel actress shifted her focus towards her personal life. She married Benji Madden in 2015 and in 2018 noted that she was “semi-retired” from acting, but later clarified that she was “actually retired.”
In 2019, Diaz and Madden, 45, welcomed their first child, a daughter named Raddix, through surrogacy. They expanded their family in 2022 with the birth of their son, Cardinal, also via surrogate.
That same year, Diaz returned from retirement to film Back in Action alongside Jamie Foxx, whom she previously collaborated with in Annie nearly a decade earlier.
In their latest movie, Diaz and Foxx, 57, portray former CIA agents and a married couple, Emily and Matt, who are drawn back into the spy world when their undercover identities are uncovered.
Back in Action marked the beginning of Diaz’s re-entry into Hollywood. She has since filmed Apple TV+’s Outcome featuring Keanu Reeves and Matt Bomer, and is set to reprise her role as Princess Fiona in Shrek 5.
“Cameron feels settled and mentally in a good space now,” a source shared exclusively with Us Weekly in their recent cover story. “She has a fresh perspective on work and the industry as a whole.”
Another insider commented that Diaz’s future “goal” is “to engage in projects — whether in acting, business, or family — that are meaningful and authentic.”
