Cast of ‘Yellowstone’ Discusses Kevin Costner’s Drama and the Series’ Future
Prior to the announcement that Yellowstone would conclude after season 5, the cast shared their thoughts regarding the show’s future.
The speculation surrounding the series finale began in February 2023 when Deadline reported that the Paramount Network was contemplating wrapping up the show following season 5 due to scheduling conflicts involving Kevin Costner, the actor portraying lead character John Dutton. At that time, it was also suggested that the network was looking into a potential spinoff featuring Matthew McConaughey in a prominent role.
However, a representative for Paramount Network refuted the claims, expressing hope that Costner, 68, would remain with the Yellowstone family “for a long time to come.” The spokesperson continued: “Thanks to the brilliant vision of Taylor Sheridan, we are continually working on expanding this incredible world he has created. Matthew McConaughey is an extraordinary talent we would love to collaborate with.”
Despite the denial, rumors regarding the future of the family drama remained rampant. Later in February 2023, Puck released an exposé alleging that Costner was delaying production on the latter half of season 5, which was initially scheduled to air in summer 2023. According to the publication, the new episodes have yet to be filmed and are now slated to begin airing in November 2023.
Costner refuted Puck‘s claims through his attorney, Marty Singer, who condemned the exposé as an “absolute lie.” Meanwhile, Paramount Network reiterated in a statement: “As we previously mentioned, Kevin has been a fundamental part of the success of our Yellowstone series, and we hope that continues moving forward.”
In May 2023, Paramount officially announced that the second half of season 5, set to premiere in November, would mark the end of the series. An untitled sequel show is scheduled to launch in December 2023.
