Charli XCX Dismisses Criticism Over ‘My Nipples’ at the 2025 Brit Awards

Charli XCX responded to the backlash surrounding the revealing, nipple-baring gown she donned at the 2025 Brit Awards.

“I’ve heard that [British broadcaster] ITV were expressing concerns about my nipples,” Charli, 32, stated during her Artist of the Year acceptance speech on Saturday, March 1. “I feel like we’re in the age of ‘free the nipple’, right?”

She continued, “They added a clap track, which is cool. Thanks for having my back.” (ITV, which aired the awards show, has yet to comment publicly on Charli’s remarks. Us Weekly has reached out for a statement.)

Charli wore a sheer black gown by Dilara Findikoglu at the Brit Awards, accessorizing with a matching veil and Hearts on Fire jewelry. After walking the red carpet with her fiancé, George Daniel, Charli left with a collection of accolades.

The Brat singer took home awards for Song of the Year, Dance Act, Album of the Year, and Artist of the Year. Additionally, she was honored with the Songwriter of the Year award, while Brat‘s executive producer, A.G. Cook, won Producer of the Year.

“I’ve always been an artist. It really takes a whole team—everyone sitting at that table,” Charli expressed during her Artist of the Year speech. “I just want to say thank you so much to those who helped me create this record.”

She finished with, “George Daniel, love you, baby.”

Charli also dedicated her award to “all the artists out there who feel like [they] don’t belong but are brave enough to keep trying, even after facing rejection countless times.”

“I share this with you,” she said. “Thank you so much. Keep the energy going.”

Later that same Saturday, Charli accepted the award for Album of the Year.

“I used to convince myself that recognition and awards weren’t important,” the British singer remarked in her follow-up speech. “It was easy for me to say that because, until last year, I had never been nominated for anything. Now, it’s refreshing not to be in that situation.”

Charli added, “I’ve always felt like an outsider in this industry, especially in the British music scene, and it feels wonderful to finally be acknowledged for this album, especially since I haven’t had to compromise my vision. I’ve been doing my own thing in my own corner for quite a while, and I’ve collaborated with the same incredible people throughout.”

According to the pop star, she aimed to share this recognition with “all the artists who feel they must compromise to gain acknowledgment.”

“I believe I’m living proof that, although it may take time, you don’t have to compromise. You can stay true to your vision,” Charli emphasized. “It’s a long path, but if you remain authentic and create great music, people will connect with you and support you.”
