Chicago Fire Recap: Surprising Baby News for Kidd and Severide

Chicago Fire‘s Stella Kidd and Kelly Severide faced yet another setback in their journey to parenthood during the season 14 premiere. What’s next for this couple?

Warning: Spoilers ahead from Chicago Fire season 14, episode 1.

In the episode that aired on Wednesday, October 1, fans discovered that Kidd’s pregnancy reveal at the end of season 13 was short-lived. After a visit to the doctor, Kidd (Miranda Rae Mayo) found out that she suffered a miscarriage just a week after taking the pregnancy test.

“The good news is there’s nothing in the exam or the labs suggesting any issues that would prevent you from having a healthy pregnancy in the future,” the doctor informed them, but Kidd was clearly in shock from the revelation.

Severide responded with, “That’s great to hear,” although Kidd remained dazed. After their appointment, she broke down in tears and apologized to her husband, wondering aloud, “I should’ve waited a couple of days to tell you or taken another test.”

“You don’t need to apologize for anything. We’re in this together. Every step of the way,” Severide reassured her, emphasizing that it was okay that the pregnancy didn’t go as planned. (Last season, the couple faced heartbreak when their adoption fell through at the last moment.)

At the conclusion of the season 14 premiere, Kidd and Severide were unexpectedly visited by Terry, the individual who managed their unsuccessful adoption.

Instead of suggesting another baby for them to care for, he asked if they would be “willing” to meet a teenager about to be removed from his group home in hopes of becoming his foster parents.

The episode wrapped up with the firefighters taken aback by the proposal, a new direction that showrunner Andrea Newman shared was what they intended for Kidd and Severide this season.

Newman exclusively told Us Weekly and Give Me My Remote on Thursday, September 25, that Kidd’s “hesitations” about pregnancy—largely stemming from her upbringing by her aunt after her parents passed away during her teenage years—were “haunting” her when she realized she was expecting so soon after the adoption fell through.

“We observed Severide’s gleeful reaction, and that moment, any reservations Kidd had seemed to dissipate. However, those feelings still linger beneath the surface,” Newman disclosed. “We thought it would be intriguing to delve into Kidd’s guilt upon learning her pregnancy didn’t last, especially since she knew she wasn’t fully on board while Severide was all in.”

The showrunner elaborated that moving forward, Kidd and Severide will be “shifting gears” as they recognize that “there’s no way to plan every step” in the journey of becoming parents.

“They previously envisioned one narrative for their family, but now a new story will unfold,” Newman hinted, pointing out that Kidd’s past with Natalie, a teenager she saved from a fire in season 13, and her own childhood loss will continue to influence their story.

She concluded, “Ultimately, it involves navigating numerous obstacles and unexpected challenges for a deeply in-love couple, particularly in their journey toward parenthood.”

Chicago Fire airs on NBC Wednesdays at 9 p.m. ET.
