Chris Colfer Shares Ways the Glee Cast Supports Naya Rivera’s Son
Even though it’s been ten years since the cast of Glee last performed together, their bond remains strong.
Chris Colfer, the actor who portrayed Kurt Hummel on the show, has shared how they stay supportive of one another.
At Elton John’s AIDS Foundation Oscar Party on March 2, Colfer discussed how he and his fellow castmates are honoring the memory of Naya Rivera.
Colfer expressed to Parade that his co-star Jenna Ushkowitz, who played Tina Cohen-Chang, “did this really beautiful thing by creating an email address for” Rivera’s 9-year-old son, Josey.
The purpose of the email is “so we could all send him stories about his mom,” Colfer, 34, shared with Parade. “I’m becoming emotional just thinking about how she was simply the greatest.”
Rivera tragically passed away in July 2020 after renting a boat to enjoy Lake Piru with her then-4-year-old son.
In a recent interview with People, Josey’s father, Ryan Dorsey, recalled one of the last moments between Josey and Rivera before they jumped into the water.
Josey recounted to his father, “We jumped in, and I asked, ‘Are we sure about this?’ She said, ‘Yeah.’ Then I thought, ‘Oh, my God, are we going to die?’ And Mommy said, ‘Don’t be silly.’ Then we jumped in and that’s what happened.”
“He mentioned that the last thing she said was his name, then she disappeared under the water, and he didn’t see her again,” Dorsey shared. “It shakes me to my core that he had to witness her final moments.”
Dorsey further added that Josey is still grappling with the memory of that tragic day.
“He often says he was trying to find a life raft, and there was a rope, but a spider was on it, and he was too scared to grab it,” Dorsey relayed to People. “I keep reminding him, ‘Buddy, that rope wasn’t going to be long enough.’”
In his op-ed for Variety honoring Rivera after her death, Colfer expressed that he found Rivera’s talent so remarkable that it made him “wonder if Naya was even real or just a dream all along.”
“How could someone be that talented, that humorous, and that beautiful at the same time?” he wrote. “How could one individual bring about such joy and create so many treasured memories?”
