Christina Applegate to Share Her MS Journey and Career in Upcoming Memoir
Christina Applegate is set to share her journey through her career and her fight with multiple sclerosis (MS) in her forthcoming memoir.
Hachette Book Group announced on Thursday, July 17, that Applegate, 53, will launch her debut book titled You With the Sad Eyes next year.
“I genuinely believe that books can help people feel less isolated. That’s my motivation for writing this,” Applegate expressed regarding her memoir. “You With the Sad Eyes won’t be a sob story about my life. It will be authentic, encompassing both the joys and sorrows, the humor and heartache of existence. So here I am, the real me. I have much to share.”
The synopsis reveals that Applegate will “disclose the complete narrative of her life in the spotlight, along with the heart-wrenching moments that remained unseen by the public.” The actress will reflect on the beginnings of her career, her struggles with MS, and her return to work in spite of her health challenges.
You With the Sad Eyes is set to be published by Little, Brown and Company, scheduled for release on March 3, 2026.
Applegate revealed her MS diagnosis in 2021. MS leads to the deterioration of the protective covering around nerves, according to the Mayo Clinic. It can cause a variety of symptoms, including numbness, weakness, difficulties with walking, and vision changes. Currently, there is no cure.
“It’s been a strange journey. Nevertheless, I have found remarkable support from acquaintances with this condition,” she shared on X then. “The road has been challenging. But, as we all know, the journey continues unless someone obstructs it. As a friend with MS expressed, ‘We wake up and take the indicated action.’ That’s my approach. Hence, I now request privacy while navigating this.”
After going public with her diagnosis, Applegate has been forthright about her difficulties and how they have impacted her daily life.
“I was oblivious to what was happening to me. That January, my toes lost feeling, which I dismissed. Then the balls of my feet went numb, and I ignored that too. Suddenly, I found myself falling over,” she revealed in a September 2022 interview with Variety. “People would say, ‘Oh, it’s just neuropathy.’ Eventually, I needed a wheelchair to get to set if it was far away. I was constantly fatigued and gained 40 pounds — it was quite a shift.”
While grappling with MS, Applegate felt her leading part in Dead to Me would be her final act.
“I probably won’t work on-camera again,” Applegate stated in a May 2023 interview with Vanity Fair, although she expressed her happiness to work alongside Linda Cardellini. “I’m grateful to have shared this experience with someone who is undoubtedly the finest actress I’ve ever collaborated with and perhaps the best human I’ve ever known.”
The subsequent year, Applegate made an inspiring return to the Emmys, where she received a standing ovation before presenting the Best Supporting Actress award.
