Cynthia Bailey Shares Update on Mary Cosby Following the Passing of Her Son Robert Jr.

Former Real Housewives of Atlanta star Cynthia Bailey is still “processing” the passing of Real Housewives of Salt Lake City star Mary Cosby’s son, Robert Cosby Jr.

“It’s so hard to talk about this,” Cynthia, 59, shared during the Monday, March 2, episode of her “Humble Brag” podcast. “I was really paralyzed by this news when I got it, and I didn’t really know what to do or what to say.”

Cynthia mentioned that she learned about Robert Jr.’s death like the rest of the public, prompting her to reach out to Mary.

“To my surprise, she answered right away. I didn’t expect her to pick up,” Cynthia continued. “Initially, I thought, ‘You didn’t have to pick up. I just wanted to call.’”

Cynthia felt that sending a text didn’t seem appropriate given the gravity of the situation.

The RHOA alum reflected on her conversation with Mary.

“I just wanted to call you and express, ‘I love you, I’m here for you, and I’m so sorry for you and your family,’” Cynthia said, while her cohost, Crystal Kung Minkoff, became emotional over the “unbelievable” circumstances. “What was so remarkable … it’s the strength you must have as a mother.”

Cynthia revealed that Mary kept saying, “It’s OK.”

“I think there are layers to this—shock, processing the reality of the situation,” Cynthia added. “I know I’m not doing the best job explaining this, but I just want to acknowledge that we’re all supporting Mary Cosby and her family. This is a tremendous loss for the Bravo community. She’s such an integral part of it.”

Us Weekly reported on Wednesday, February 25, that Robert Jr. passed away at age 23. The Salt Lake City Police Department confirmed to Us that they responded to a call regarding an overdose at Mary and her husband, Robert Cosby Sr.’s home early last week. Robert Jr. was found deceased upon their arrival.

“Our beloved son Robert Jr. has been called home to the Lord,” Mary stated in a message to Us. “Though we ache with grief, we find solace in God’s promise and knowing he is finally at peace. We’re grateful for your prayers and trust in the Lord to guide us through this sorrowful time.”

Cynthia shared on the “Humble Brag” podcast that she and Mary became friends while filming The Real Housewives Ultimate Road Trip earlier this year.

“I remember asking about him,” Cynthia said of Robert Jr. “At that time, he was either in jail or just getting released. Mary was very positive. We were all hopeful for his recovery. I’m not sure I have the right words.”

Robert Jr. was arrested late last year for violating a protective order from his ex-wife. He announced his release from jail with a return to Instagram on February 6.

Robert Jr. also faced challenges with addiction prior to his passing, a situation depicted over recent seasons of RHOSLC. During a season 5 episode that aired in November 2024, Robert Jr. openly discussed his substance abuse with Mary on camera.

“At first, I thought, ‘I’ll stick to natural stuff.’ Then, I went to a party, and someone offered me Xanax. I started buying it,” he shared at the time. “Then, I began mixing Xanax with acid and then molly. I really liked Xanax, so I combined it with everything.”

Mary has received praise for her transparency regarding her son’s struggles on the show.

“It’s a reality show; we’re meant to showcase our reality, and when I tell you that being able to reveal this was incredibly impactful for many families facing similar addiction issues,” Cynthia remarked on Monday. “My heart goes out to her and her family, and I was truly glad to have a moment to speak with her. She’s persevering and shows gratitude for everyone’s love and support.”
