The Expert Edit showcases interviews with specialists about their must-have products in their respective fields. In the latest installment, we chatted with makeup artist Chelsea Uchenna about her beauty product recommendations for on-set work.

Although diversity remains a challenge in the beauty sector, there are transformational figures advancing representation for the BIPOC community. While makeup icons like Pat McGrath come to mind, another disruptor gaining attention is Chelsea Uchenna. Known as “Makeup by Chelsea,” she captivates audiences with her innovative makeup transformation videos and glam breakdowns on TikTok, having worked with stars such as Ayra Starr, Saweetie, and Leomie Anderson.

“Being versatile is crucial in this industry. Even where I am now, I’m continuously learning and evolving.”

While any glam Uchenna produces is stellar, her recent work with Doechii exemplifies her skill in extraordinary ways. The London-based makeup artist joined forces with the “Swamp Princess” earlier this year, crafting a series of breathtaking beauty looks, including Doechii’s smokey eye for Tom Ford’s showcase at Paris Fashion Week. “I cherish everyone I work with, so I often find myself thinking, ‘Wow, this collaboration is truly special,'” Uchenna reflects on her partnership with the artist. Together, they made history with one of the most iconic beauty moments at the 2025 Met Gala: the Louis Vuitton logo stamped on the rapper’s glam.

Though Uchenna’s talent has afforded her access to the industry’s highest echelons, her journey is rooted in her longstanding passion for makeup. She first experimented with her mother’s makeup at the tender age of 12 (despite not being permitted to). “I would create mini looks using my mum’s supplies and share them on Snapchat,” she recalls. “I remember someone reaching out to ask if I could replicate a look for them, marking my first client.” Unbeknownst to Uchenna, this playful hobby laid the groundwork for her future as the makeup innovator she is today.

Despite her impressive résumé, Uchenna remains humble and sees herself as a continual learner. “Don’t limit yourself or shy away from new experiences. Versatility in this industry is vital. Even in my position now, I’m still honing my craft and learning,” she expresses.

With this perspective, the beauty expert has undoubtedly progressed, but beyond the glamorous events and jet-setting experiences, one achievement stands out: hosting a masterclass. “Last October, I conducted a masterclass, which was significant for my journey because I view myself as a beauty content creator and also an educator,” she states. “Everything I learn, I strive to share, so hosting a sold-out event filled with like-minded individuals aspiring in beauty was phenomenal. I’ve aspired to emulate icons like Danessa Myricks and Makeup by Mario, who lead masterclasses, and I declared I would do that one day, and I did.”

Up next, Uchenna will unveil her top beauty product recommendations and essentials, including her favorite summer setting spray and the highlighter she consistently uses on Doechii.
