Dolly Parton Embraces an ‘Artificial’ Look: ‘I Enjoy the Over-the-Top Style’
Dolly Parton continues to affirm her well-known phrase, “It costs a lot of money to look this cheap.”
“Growing up, people labeled this woman as ‘trash’ for donning excessive makeup, voluminous hair, bright nails, high heels, and short skirts, but as a child, I found that impressive,” Parton, 79, shared in an interview with WWD that was published on Wednesday, April 1, while discussing her collaboration with Khloé Kardashian’s co-founded label, Good American.
Parton elaborated, “I aim for a cheap look. That’s my aesthetic. I want to have a touch of what some might call ‘trashy.’” The country music icon clarified that she doesn’t view “trashy” negatively, but rather as an “artificial look.”
“I enjoy the over-the-top,” she stated. “I like my hair bleached. I possess some truly exquisite clothing, yet you’d hardly discern their price since the costly pieces look similar on me as the less expensive ones do for the most part.”
In her Good American collection, Parton showcases embellished high-waisted pants paired with vests, bootcut jeans, gingham tops, and more.

“I hope [people] will feel they look fabulous, and it will instill a bit of confidence and style, so they can feel like they have a touch of that country spirit,” she expressed about her collection. “It’s got a hint of Dolly in it.”
Parton undoubtedly enjoys donning her favorite denim pieces at home. “I typically wear very comfortable outfits [everyday],” she mentioned, adding that she “usually” styles her hair and applies makeup, even while relaxing at home.
“I’ll throw on a pullover shirt and jeans, and if I know someone is coming over, I can quickly add some earrings or a delicate silver necklace.” Given her style, we’d bet that her jewelry collection is anything but artificial.
