DWTS Judge Carrie Ann Inaba Opens Up About Her Decision Not to Have Children

Dancing With the Stars’ annual Dedication Night prompted some judges to reflect on their family experiences.

Following Robert Irwin‘s contemporary dance tribute to his mother, Terri Irwin, on Tuesday, October 14, Carrie Ann Inaba felt inspired to share insights from her own life.

“You know, I’ve never had children,” she said from the judges’ table. “But Terri, if I could have had kids, I would want them to be like Robert. Your son is truly remarkable, and it reflects in his dancing. You are so genuine and connected, always reaching out to the audience. It was absolutely beautiful.”

While Inaba, 57, generally keeps her personal life private, she has previously discussed the significance of family to her.

Robert Irwin brought tears to the ballroom during Dancing With the Stars’ Dedication Night. The 21-year-old Australian conservationist dedicated his dance on Tuesday, October 14, to his mother, Terri Irwin, who single-handedly raised him and sister Bindi Irwin after their father Steve Irwin’s passing in 2006. In a social media update, Inaba posted a photo featuring her mother, her “spiritual daughter,” and her dogs.

“Family. Sometimes it doesn’t resemble what we imagined it would look like… it’s even better,” she expressed on Instagram on January 3. “Why is it better? As we grow older, we realize many beliefs need to be unlearned. We discard what doesn’t belong to us and begin anew, often feeling depleted from attempting to live a life that isn’t authentically ours.”

As 2025 began, Inaba felt grateful to welcome a new year surrounded by loved ones.

“I cherish this simple moment we shared,” she added. “Exchanging love, dreams, and puppy kisses.”

Inaba was not the only judge to ponder family during Dancing With the Stars’ Dedication Night.

After Robert, 21, and his partner, Witney Carson, performed to “You’ll Be In My Heart” by Phil Collins, Derek Hough — who is expecting a child with his wife Hayley Erbert — fought back tears as he prepared to give his score.

“The love I feel for your family,” he shared with Robert. “I hold such affection for you all. I’m incredibly proud of you. You’ve grown into an outstanding person, and the world needs the Irwin family.”

Guest judge Kym Johnson-Herjavec — who has twins with Robert Herjavec — remarked, “[Terri,] your love for your family and the incredible woman you are is palpable. I’ll be coming to you later for advice on how you raised such wonderful children.”
