Emily in Paris Season 5 Finale Breakdown: Who Got Engaged and Who Broke Up?

Season 5 of Emily in Paris showcased an engagement, breakups, and updates on Lucas Bravo‘s elusive character Gabriel — but what about the rest?

Netflix premiered season 5 on Thursday, December 18, continuing from the moment Emily (Lily Collins) decided to pursue a future with Marcello (Eugenio Franceschini) in Rome. Their intertwined personal and professional lives led to a separation halfway through the season.

Emily and Marcello eventually reunited, but a misunderstanding led her to decline his proposal. Although Marcello hadn’t intended to propose, it prompted them to realize their different desires—he wanted to stay in Rome, while she preferred Paris. Ultimately, they ended things for good, with Gabriel (Bravo) learning of this through Sylvie (Philippine Leroy-Beaulieu).

Gabriel was mostly absent this season, having taken a job on a boat. The season’s final scene featured him in Greece writing a postcard to Emily inviting her to visit, leaving the future of their romance uncertain — for now.

“Assuming we get picked up, I want to return to Paris. But I’m also keen to explore other places,” director and executive producer Andrew Fleming exclusively shared with Us Weekly. “It’s hinted where we might end up by the end of season 5 — there’s a chance we’ll be heading to Greece.”

Samuel Arnold, who portrays Julian, expressed excitement about the potential relocation, stating to Us, “I’m not going to lie. If they want to shoot in Greece, whatever the reason, I say, ‘Let’s go.’ I’ve never been to Greece.”

This season also featured another love triangle, with Mindy (Ashley Park) secretly seeing Alfie (Lucien Laviscount) after breaking up with Nico (Paul Forman). Their relationship ended once Emily found out, but feelings lingered. When Nico returned to Mindy’s life, she took him back, leading to their engagement — just before Lucien planned to fight for her.

“We really see Emily and Mindy in different situations. It’s the first time their friendship has diverged from how Lily and I have interacted in real life,” Park shared with Us regarding their falling out.

The actress noted that Mindy and Emily traditionally mirrored the closeness she shares with Collins in reality.

“But I’m proud of both women in the show. We witness a genuine sisterhood that grows stronger between them,” Park continued. “However, I would say Emily in Paris keeps surprising me.”

According to Park, she “did not see” the direction of Mindy’s storyline coming.

“I feel like I’ve been part of eight different genres of shows rolled into one,” she enthused. “What more could you ask for? I never know what to anticipate. I’ve pretty much stopped expecting. It feels surreal. They really keep us on our toes.”

Another breakup this season involved Sylvie ending her marriage, along with experiencing brief romantic encounters throughout.

Emily in Paris is currently available for streaming on Netflix.
