Explaining the Ending of The Madison Season 1: Who Passed Away and Who Left?

The season finale of The Madison delivered an unexpected conclusion following shocking onscreen deaths and significant relocations to Montana — but did the show wrap up satisfactorily?

Season 1 wrapped up on Saturday, March 21, with Stacy (Michelle Pfeiffer) and the Clyburn family grappling with the aftermath of Preston’s (Kurt Russell) death. Although they remained in Montana, they ultimately had to prepare for a return to New York. This transition proved challenging for many — with Paige (Elle Chapman) nearly facing arrest and Stacy continuing her therapy.

In the end, Stacy opted to return to Montana while the rest of her family stayed in New York — for the time being.

The Madison portrays the Clyburn family from New York City, who “relocate to the Madison River valley of southwest Montana for emotional recovery following a tragedy that shattered the family.”

Alongside Russell, 74, and Pfeiffer, 67, the cast features Patrick J. Adams, Elle Chapman, Matthew Fox, Beau Garrett, Alaina Pollack, Amiah Miller as fellow members of the Clyburn family, with Ben Schnetzer, Kevin Zegers, Rebecca Spence and Danielle Vasinova rounding out the ensemble.

“Taylor has a remarkable ability to convey what he wants through the script. There’s always a distinctiveness to the locations — to the most impactful moments of scenes in relation to character descriptions,” said executive producer and director Christina Alexandra Voros about working with Sheridan, 55. “The scripts contain so much essence that we have fewer discussions than one might expect. We’ve been collaborating for quite a while, and I feel fortunate to interpret his writing for the screen.”

Voros also addressed the choice to depict Preston’s death onscreen — and its subsequent effects.

Taylor Sheridan has gathered an impressive cast in his latest hit The Madison — but who portrays each character amid numerous shocking onscreen deaths? As outlined in the official synopsis, The Madison tells the story of the Clyburn family from New York City, who “relocate to the Madison River valley of southwest Montana for emotional recovery following a […]

“The experience of grief is universal. However, its personal nature comes from the specific ways it is explored,” Voros shared exclusively with Us Weekly. “One reason I find the show resonates so deeply is that viewers can see themselves or their loved ones reflected in these characters. We empathize more with a character when their experiences are distinctly relatable.”

It was always intended to portray every facet of losing a loved one.

“Living with a character through a moment — whether it’s waiting for luggage at the airport or being in a coroner’s office — are those subtle instances where the enormity of what you are facing stands front and center,” she elaborated. “This emotional space provides a powerful backdrop for storytelling.”
