Gavin Casalegno Discusses His Hesitations About The Summer I Turned Pretty Storyline
Gavin Casalegno is thrilled to return as Jeremiah in The Summer I Turned Pretty movie, although he admitted that one storyline from season 3 made him a bit “hesitant” at that moment.
In an interview with Us Weekly during the T-Mobile exclusive event at the Las Vegas Grand Prix, the 26-year-old discussed Jeremiah’s romantic exploration with Denise (Isabella Briggs) following his engagement breakup with Belly (Lola Tung).
“It may be a tad premature for him to dive back into a relationship — if Gavin were to give advice,” Casalegno joked. “But he’s not, so whatever brings him joy.”
He expressed support for Jeremiah’s decisions, saying, “Go for it, but I do feel a bit cautious about him entering a new relationship.”
Season 3, which wrapped up in September, chronicled Jeremiah and Belly’s path to the altar. Although they began the season engaged, the fictional couple called it quits just before their wedding, leading Belly to end up with Jeremiah’s brother, Conrad (Chris Briney).
Meanwhile, Jeremiah established a bond with Steven’s (Sean Kaufman) coworker and friend, Denise.
“I believe Denise perceives Jeremiah differently. Belly growing up with him creates a level of familiarity that might have held him back,” Casalegno pointed out. “Denise feels more genuine and brings out different aspects of Jeremiah — but whether that’s beneficial or detrimental remains to be seen.”
Following the conclusion of season 3, Prime Video confirmed a movie is in development that will revisit every character.
“I don’t have a script or any details. I don’t even know when I’ll start filming,” Casalegno shared with Us. “What I do know is I’ll be filming next year, and I’m uncertain about the plot. Your guess is as good as mine.”
Casalegno is eager to discover the next chapter for Jeremiah, stating, “I hope he keeps cooking and pursues his passions — but honestly, I’m in the dark. I even reached out to [creator] Jenny [Han] recently asking, ‘What can you tell me?’ She didn’t reveal anything.”
With the secret of Belly’s choice no longer looming over him, the actor joked about how much he enjoyed building suspense.
“I won’t lie, I had a blast teasing everyone like, ‘Hey, you never know if it’ll follow the book,’” he reminisced. “Then fans would get all riled up in their imaginations. I thoroughly enjoyed being Team Jeremiah and watching the reactions.”
He added, “There was certainly an expectation for [the love triangle reactions] to weigh on my mental health. Many fans struggle to separate reality from fiction. But their passion for this series is what I cherish. If they didn’t care, that would feel disheartening.”
Before returning to the set, Casalegno attended the T-Mobile exclusive unveiling, where executives presented significant news and explained how the Un-carrier is addressing another customer challenge, alongside upcoming events at LVGP this year. Acknowledging that switching can be complicated, T-Mobile is simplifying the process with a new experience on T-Life, utilizing innovative AI-powered tools for a faster and easier transition.
The Summer I Turned Pretty is available for streaming on Prime Video.
