Last year, “Challengers” sparked a fascination with tennis. While we may not all be starring in critically-acclaimed romance films, we can certainly adjust our beauty routines to reflect the styles of our favorite tennis stars. With the US Open in full swing, now is the perfect time to perfect your tenniscore beauty look. “This is a high-level sport, so a player’s main focus is functionality,” hairstylist Dhairius Thomas shares with Popsugar. How does this translate into your tenniscore vibe? Expect to see practical updos, a fresh-faced dewy makeup look (that might resemble sweat), and understated country-club nail designs.
Continue reading for tips on giving your beauty routine a tenniscore upgrade.
How to Achieve Tenniscore Hair
Whether you’re a long-time tennis fan or just starting to tune in, you’ll notice a trend among tenniscore hairstyles: they keep hair secured and away from the face.
“Tennis players need a style that ensures visibility,” Thomas explains. “Traditionally, this has looked like a simple ponytail.” However, thanks to legends like Venus and Serena Williams, the definition of a “traditional” tennis hairstyle has expanded over time. “Their incorporation of beads and braids has shown that you can develop a signature style in tennis that captivates audiences around the globe.”
Consider ways to elevate your usual updo. “Looks can vary from a classic high ponytail, a half-up, half-down style, a low bun, or even a braided ponytail,” Thomas suggests. “When accessorizing your look, don’t forget a sun visor or a trendy headband for that quintessential tennis-chic appeal.” A standout accessory for this style is the ’90s-inspired wide fabric headband, seen on several stars off the courts.
How to Achieve Tenniscore Nails
By now, you likely understand that tenniscore nails should be functional enough for both on-court and off-court wear. “I recommend a short, soft-square manicure for the tenniscore trend because long nails can be cumbersome while gripping a racket,” says celebrity manicurist Julie Kandalec. While nail length and shape are vital, there’s room for creativity with nail art.
“Short square nails are timeless, so you can’t go wrong with a micro-french design,” Kandalec notes. “It’s practical while staying stylish.” She also suggests a neon green to echo the hue of a tennis ball.
How to Achieve Tenniscore Makeup
While makeup might not be the focus for athletes during matches, it’s certainly fun to play around with on the sidelines. “Tenniscore makeup can be characterized as minimal yet long-lasting,” makeup artist Gabi Alvarez explains. Your skin should appear as your own, just subtly enhanced. “You can create this look by opting for products that provide a radiant finish, such as moisturizers, liquid highlighters, and sunscreen,” Alvarez adds. Is that highlight or perspiration? The mystery continues.
So there you have it: three ways to embody the tennis star you’ve always aspired to be. (You’re welcome).
