Grey’s Anatomy Teases Departure Following Kwan’s Criminal Act

The Grey’s Anatomy exits may not be finished just yet, as the latest episode suggests a potential departure following a resident’s crime.

In the Thursday, March 26 episode of the ABC series, Kwan (Harry Shum Jr.) bonded with a new patient: a father diagnosed with terminal cancer and his teenage son. Kwan became frustrated when the FDA rejected approval for a treatment that could assist the patient’s tumor, even though the gel was accessible in the hospital.

Bailey (Chandra Wilson) conducted a separate surgery on the patient and left him on the table, at which point Kwan secretly administered the gel to the man without her knowledge. He later confessed to Bailey, who informed him that he had committed an offense by administering something to a patient during a procedure without their awareness.

Kwan’s uncertain future at Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital follows the announcement that Kevin McKidd and Kim Raver will be departing the show at the end of the season. This season alone, Grey’s Anatomy has seen numerous cast changes.

Following the shocking death of Monica (Natalie Morales), Amelia (Caterina Scorsone) opted for a sabbatical. Reports indicated that Scorsone’s break would extend until the end of 2025 as part of a cost-saving initiative.

The series is already scaling back the minimum guarantees for its veteran cast to 14 out of the 18 episodes per season. While several consistent stars of Grey’s Anatomy will miss four episodes, Scorsone’s absence will be doubled.

Showrunner Meg Marinis has previously suggested that not all characters will be safe this season.

“But even in the last two seasons and what you saw this year, we had to trim the cast a bit [due to industry-wide budget cuts], and everyone has very passionate feelings about their favorite characters,” Marinis told The Hollywood Reporter in May 2025. “If we can stir up the writers, we know we’re on the right track. It’s not as satisfying if people aren’t upset when someone leaves. The goal is to create that emotional response, so I anticipate some debates. But I’ve also been convinced to change my mind on certain matters.”

Raver, 57, reflected on the potential of exiting Grey’s Anatomy shortly before news of the multiple cast departures emerged.

“That’s the life of an actor,” Raver exclusively shared with Us Weekly prior to her unexpected exit, discussing her experience working on a prominent medical drama amidst ongoing cast changes.

“When I was on 24, I always felt like being Jack Bauer’s girlfriend—there was a target on my back,” she added. (Raver portrayed TK on the sci-fi series from seasons tk to tk.)

Having played Teddy since season 6, Raver aimed to concentrate on her on-screen work instead of worrying about her job security.

“It’s really about being in the moment and doing the work while following the incredible storylines the writers provide,” she explained. “Especially with all the thrilling cliffhangers we now have. You never know what will happen.”

Grey’s Anatomy airs on ABC Thursdays at 10 p.m. ET before streaming the next day on Hulu.
