Hailee Steinfeld Explains Her Reasons for Trying a Plant-Based Diet

Hailee Steinfeld places a high priority on healthy eating.

“I’m not a vegan, but I followed a plant-based diet for a couple of years due to various stomach sensitivities,” Steinfeld, 28, shared in the Friday, July 18, edition of her “Beau Society” newsletter. “I consulted with a gastroenterologist and underwent one of those extensive panels, which revealed that my body was reacting to numerous foods I was consuming.”

She noted, “It isn’t that those foods were bad, but I think I was overindulging. So I switched to a plant-based diet, and it was amazing. I realized that I actually enjoy many meals that are ‘vegan’ without even being aware of it.”

While the Sinners star didn’t specify why or when she stopped the diet, she has been open about cultivating a healthy perspective toward food.

“My relationship with food is pretty straightforward. I eat when I’m hungry,” Steinfeld told Women’s Health in 2022. “I eat to fuel my training; I don’t train just to eat. I feel I can perform at my best with that mindset.”

Currently, she is an aspiring chef and mentioned on Friday that she recently prepared a cacio e pepe ravioli that she described as “chef’s kiss.”

“Making pasta is time-consuming but dare I say, quite simple,” she said. “We also made bruschetta. Next up is this Alison Roman chicken and artichoke dinner [recipe].”

Steinfeld complements her diet with regular workout sessions.

“I’ve never finished a workout or gym session feeling anything but great and happier,” the actress added to Women’s Health. “Knowing what my body is capable of and being able to push myself… it has a unique mental benefit that not many other activities provide.”

During that time, Steinfeld revealed she trains with her dad, who “truly recognizes [her] potential.”

“He has faith in me, encourages me, and understands what I can achieve,” Steinfeld emphasized. “It’s all about finding the right balance, understanding your state on a given day, what you want to accomplish, and being kind and patient with yourself.”

Steinfeld’s workout routine also includes taking her two dogs, Martini and Brando, on outdoor walks. Her pups even received a cute mention in her Friday newsletter.

“I never intended to have small dogs, but here we are! Martini and Brando would absolutely love a bigger dog,” she exclaimed, adding that she plans to adopt another furry friend in the future. “My brother has a golden retriever (Dwight!), and they spend a lot of time together and get along wonderfully.”
