High Potential’s Expanded Season 2 After Big Twist: Everything You Need to Know

High Potential is making a comeback with additional episodes, but what surprises await fans in season 2 regarding plot twists, romance, and more?

Debuting in September 2024, High Potential centers around a brilliant intellectual named Morgan (Kaitlin Olson) who collaborates with the LAPD to crack murder cases. She partners with Karadec (Daniel Sunjata), who is initially doubtful of Morgan’s contributions to the Major Crimes unit but gradually comes to depend on her insight.

The season 1 finale, which aired in February, revealed that Morgan’s ex, Roman, is still alive after being missing for over a decade. However, Morgan is primarily focused on a new case where the suspect evaded capture — only for that suspect to find a way to connect with her discreetly.

Executive producer and showrunner Todd Harthan shared insights with Us Weekly about the intention behind introducing a new mystery in advance of season 2.

“Our top priority in the writers’ room is crafting a compelling case that allows viewers to experience Morgan’s complex thought process,” he explained. “This is enhanced by the intriguing detectives around her. We understand the audience’s — and our — appetite for serialized mysteries. The challenge lies in ensuring that this doesn’t overshadow the exciting cases that viewers eagerly anticipate each week.”

Harthan added: “Finding this balance is challenging, which is why we rely on our team to keep our approach in check. They’ll point out, ‘If we unveil this too soon, it overshadows the upcoming episode,’ making it a delicate undertaking in constructing each episode of the show.”

Despite the cliffhangers, High Potential has already been greenlit for a second season. Keep reading for everything you need to know:

When Will Season 2 Premiere?

In January, High Potential was officially renewed for a second season, which will consist of 18 episodes. It is set to launch in the fall following season 1’s record-breaking ratings on ABC.

Which Cast Members Are Returning?

Along with Olson and Sunjata, Javicia Leslie, Deniz Akdeniz, Amirah J, Matthew Lamb, and Judy Reyes will reprise their roles. The show has also featured Taran Killam, Garret Dillahunt, and JD Pardo in recurring parts. New faces joining the cast include Steve Howey and Mekhi Phifer.

Will More Episodes Be Added?

“I take fan feedback seriously and pay attention to what resonates with viewers since it influences our discussions and focus,” Harthan mentioned in February, discussing the opportunity for more episodes in season 2. “I usually plan for a 13-episode order, so the extra hours are a welcome bonus. I can map them out ahead and have contingencies for standalone episodes if necessary.”

Will Roman Be Reintroduced?

With Morgan’s ex hinted at in the first season, the storyline will only grow moving forward.

“We’ve discussed various options like, ‘Wow, we have the opportunity to book this actor or that actor.’ But I haven’t delved deeply into this with Kaitlin, who is very involved in casting and has great instincts,” Harthan told Us. “So the short answer is no. While we have some contenders in mind, we haven’t narrowed it down yet.”

Harthan looks forward to introducing new characters in season 2, adding, “There are casting opportunities — not just for guest stars but for recurring roles. We haven’t met Morgan’s parents yet, or anyone else, making Roman a crucial casting element. I daydream about who could fit that role but haven’t settled on anyone.”

Olson also plays a role in the casting. “Kaitlin attracts talent — actors want to work alongside her because it seems like a fantastic experience. And they’re right; it is,” he said. “I hope there’s interest in guest-starring on High Potential. I want to see who is eager to join us.”

However, Roman’s return might not be immediate.

“I believe audience frustration can be a good thing; it keeps viewers engaged — don’t reveal everything they want too quickly,” Harthan shared regarding the deepening mystery. “I would be lying if I claimed to have the complete answers. The great part of collaborating with a diverse group is ensuring we tell the story in the most satisfying way possible. There are exciting developments ahead.”

Will Season 2 Delve Into Morgan and Karadec’s Relationship?

Fans noted how Karadec and Morgan’s chemistry in High Potential resembles other iconic procedural couples that took years to unite romantically.

“I can’t definitively say what direction the dynamic will take. The will-they-won’t-they aspect between Karadec and Morgan is in the hands of our writers,” Sunjata revealed to Us in November 2024. “I think they’re opting for a long-term development of that storyline.”

Sunjata didn’t dismiss the possibility of Karadec and Morgan remaining platonic, now or even long-term.

“Realistically, if we get to five seasons, Karadec and Morgan could maintain a deeply respectful friendship while perhaps exploring flirting or deeper feelings. But if that never occurred, I think that would be a unique approach too,” he mentioned.

Harthan, on the other hand, is more inclined to act on viewer responses.

“We can’t predict everything, and I remain cautious regarding those developments. Audience feedback is vital for guiding our creative decisions. What are they eager for?” Harthan discussed with Us about the potential fan-favorite couple. “I’m known for slow-building plots, but I personally enjoy a gradual evolution.”

Harthan expressed uncertainty about how the chemistry between Morgan and Karadec would be portrayed. “Because they have such chemistry — and with two fantastic actors — there are numerous narrative paths available early in the show. I cherish their budding friendship, which is cultivating loyalty and unconditional support. That charm captivates me,” he noted.

He continued, “We’ll foster that dynamic for a while. Even if romantic feelings arise, the partnership and friendship may still hold a primary significance. And perhaps the fear of crossing certain lines becomes a crucial element. … There’s a lot of life and potential in this show, and we aim to develop it at a pace that honors a compelling narrative.”

How Will the New Antagonist Fit In?

The season 1 finale introduced David Giuntoli as a serial kidnapper, who may evolve into the “serialized big bad” in season 2.

“We wanted to ensure this plot line didn’t become overly dark, sadistic, or brutal, so it aligns with the tone of our series. That was a fine line for us,” Harthan explained to Us. “For someone to rival Morgan, they must be exceptionally intelligent, confident, and ready for a challenge, as she often gets underestimated by those who think they know better.”

Harthan hopes the new storyline will keep the series from becoming “predictable.”

“At her core, Morgan is an incredibly kind and empathetic person. To see someone using their brilliance to inflict harm is a distressing reality,” he added. “Our goal was to explore these complexities without diving into the darkest aspects of serial killer stories. That’s not the essence of our show.”

What Changes to Expect in Season 2?

“From season 1, I’ve learned that we have a remarkable cast capable of tackling diverse storylines. They truly are,” Harthan told Us. “What will be notably different in season 2 is that we’re ready to explore a broader scope. We didn’t fully develop the ensemble characters yet — we haven’t delved into their personal lives, backgrounds, or the challenges they faced to get where they are.”

At that time, Harthan hinted at season 2 providing “rich fertile ground” for character exploration.

“We’re enthusiastic about expanding on other characters this time. The most crucial lesson learned is understanding the emotional connections. Why do we care about certain cases, and how do they resonate with each character, not just Morgan?” he explained. “It’s about being diligent with the stories we choose to portray weekly. I view each episode as its own mini-movie, and we’re fortunate to apply the lessons we learned to ensure none of these episodes feels wasted. Regardless of how many episodes we ultimately get, we’ll treat each as its own cinematic experience.”
