How the Amanda Knox Show Compares to the Meredith Kercher Murder Trial
Hulu has gone above and beyond to reimagine Tell Me Lies‘ Grace Van Patten as Amanda Knox — but how does the series measure up against the real-life murder trial of Meredith Kercher?
The Twisted Tale of Amanda Knox, which debuted on August 20, is a limited series that draws inspiration from Knox’s journey of being “wrongfully convicted for the tragic murder of her roommate, Meredith Kercher, and her 16-year battle for freedom.” Alongside Patten, the cast includes Sharon Horgan, John Hoogenakker, Francesco Acquaroli, Giuseppe De Domenico, and Roberta Mattei.
In 2007, Knox made headlines when she was accused of murdering her roommate Kercher while they were studying abroad in Perugia, Italy. Despite little evidence, Knox received a 26-year prison sentence after she and then-boyfriend Raffaele Sollecito were convicted.
An appellate court acquitted the former couple in 2011, only for them to be found guilty again three years later during a retrial. However, the Italian supreme court ultimately exonerated Knox of involvement in Kercher’s murder in 2015.
Ivorian migrant Rudy Guede was convicted in 2008 for Kercher’s murder and sentenced to 30 years in prison after his DNA was found at the crime scene. His sentence was later reduced, allowing his release in November 2021.
Before the premiere of The Twisted Tale of Amanda Knox, Knox shared her “gratitude” with Us Weekly regarding her opportunity to narrate her story.
“Ultimately, it’s about whether I have a voice and if that voice matters in the storytelling process. Hulu has recognized this and is taking a chance to affirm that the subject brings a valuable perspective,” she reflected in March 2025. “We don’t have to fool ourselves into thinking that there are objective screenwriters who aren’t infusing their own experiences. This is a fascinating experiment currently taking place.”
She added: “I’m incredibly honored to collaborate with Monica [Lewinsky], my mentor, who is also an executive producer. While I can’t share too much now as we’re still in production, I can say that this is another instance where I am given the opportunity to have my perspective acknowledged.”
