Is Everyone Watching Netflix’s New Crime Thriller? Here’s What You Need to Know!
June brings a wealth of incredible TV shows to Netflix, but the standout new miniseries this month is The Survivors.
This Australian drama has already become one of the most viewed series on Netflix and may even clinch the top spot.
The show is inspired by the novel of the same name by Jane Harper from 2020, featuring Charlie Vickers as Kieran Elliott, a man who experienced the loss of three close friends due to a tragic event 15 years prior to the story. Kieran’s brother, Finn (Remy Kidd), and friend, Toby (Talon Hopper), drowned, while the whereabouts of their other friend, Gabby (Eloise Rothfield), remain a mystery.
In the present day, Kieran gathers the strength to return home after years, accompanied by his partner, Mia Chang (Yerin Ha), and their young child. A newcomer named Bronte (Shannon Berry) seizes the chance to inquire about Gabby’s fate from 15 years ago. The discovery of Bronte’s body sets off a thrilling narrative across six episodes.
The Series Unveils Two Interwoven Mysteries
The discovery of Bronte’s body in the premiere episode not only ignites an ongoing investigation but also revives interest in Gabby’s disappearance from 15 years ago. This places Kieran and Mia at the center of the evolving mysteries, stirring up long-held sentiments within his family.
The heightened tension in Evelyn Bay arises from its small-town dynamics, where everyone is familiar with one another. This intensifies the suspicion and paranoia, making it compelling to watch as the community grapples with whom to blame for both tragedies. Kieran has carried this heavy burden for half of his life, and the pressure mounts as clues begin to surface close to home.
The Emotional Stakes Are Elevated

The primary conflict in the series is not between Kieran and the elusive murderer, nor even with the townspeople who have somewhat ostracized him for years. Instead, it centers on Kieran’s relationship with his mother, Verity (Robyn Malcolm), who has never allowed him to forget that she holds him responsible for his brother’s death.
At times, Verity expresses herself through passive-aggressiveness towards her only living son. Other moments reveal her more blatant feelings. Her judgment echoes Kieran’s self-recrimination, as both have harbored their pain privately for far too long, with an inevitable confrontation looming.
Ha deserves credit for her performance as Mia, as she bears the weight of much emotional turmoil. This includes not just the tension between Kieran and his mother, but also the strain that Kieran often directs towards her. Mia faces discrimination as an outsider in town, possibly due to her Asian heritage, which adds depth to her steadfast support for Kieran in challenging times.
‘The Survivors’ Delivers a Satisfying Conclusion

Without revealing spoilers for The Survivors, it’s important to note that this is a miniseries rather than a continuous Netflix original. This means there aren’t any cliffhangers, and it doesn’t aim to draw viewers into another season. By the conclusion of these six episodes, the complete narrative of what transpired in the past, who was responsible for Bronte’s death, and how all the elements connect will be thoroughly revealed.
Most notably, the ending offers a sense of emotional resolution for the characters’ journeys. After watching this miniseries, there’s little need to return to Evelyn Bay, as it successfully delivers the compelling story it promises.
The Survivors is available for streaming on Netflix.
