Is Harrison Ford Departing from Shrinking Season 4? Details on the Changes Explained
Apple TV’s popular series Shrinking is gearing up for an exciting season 4 with significant changes, leading some fans to speculate that Harrison Ford may not return as a central character.
Since its debut in 2023, Jason Segel has portrayed Jimmy, a grieving therapist who decides to become more involved in his patients’ lives. Ford, 83, plays Paul, a senior therapist and Jimmy’s colleague who struggles with Parkinson’s disease.
Creator Bill Lawrence has previously mentioned a three-season arc for the series. The first season focused on Jimmy’s grief, while the second dealt with forgiveness as he connected with the man who accidentally took his wife’s life. Season 3, which wrapped on April 8, follows Jimmy as he begins to move on and potentially finds love with Cobie Smulders’ character, Sofi.
Lawrence’s comments regarding a shift in direction for season 4 raised eyebrows on social media recently. However, the 57-year-old screenwriter clarified that the same cast would return in their roles next season. He also assured fans that Ford’s character will remain, despite rumors about Paul’s health deteriorating.
During a PaleyFest LA panel on April 7, Ford reflected on his role, describing it as “one of the most pleasurable experiences of my life.” He was joined by Segel, Jessica Williams, Lukita Maxwell, Luke Tennie, Christa Miller, Michael Urie, and Ted McGinley, all of whom are expected to return.
“I think when fans return to this show, they will find it tells a completely different story,” Lawrence stated during the event. “We agreed to continue because we felt the cast and characters had enough going on in their lives that we were interested in exploring a new narrative for them.”
Lawrence hinted at what fans can expect in season 4.
“There are unresolved plot points from the third season, hinting that the next season will be different based on the characters’ actions and their paths,” he added. “Don’t be surprised if there’s a time jump, making it feel like a completely new story.”
Lawrence emphasized, “If the fourth season aired and Jimmy was still mourning his wife, I’d say, ‘Turn the TV off.’ You can’t revisit that. We aim for viewers to experience a truly optimistic and happy conclusion.”
Shrinking is currently available for streaming on Apple TV.
