Jana Kramer Addresses Sunscreen Controversy and Clarifies Her Position
Jana Kramer is sharing her stance on sunscreen before critics can add more negativity.
“I’m simply doing what I believe is best for my kids,” Kramer, 41, mentioned on the July 16 episode of iHeartRadio’s “Whine Down” podcast. “I would never allow my children to just burn in the sun.”
The One Tree Hill star recognized that she isn’t a dermatologist and doesn’t have all the answers. Instead, she remains open to various research surrounding the sunscreen conversation.
“I’ve come across so much negative information about sunscreen — its effects and what it can cause,” she clarified. “I’ve also encountered negative thoughts on the sun and its potential harm. I believe a balanced approach is necessary. We need a bit of both, but not an excess of either.”
Earlier this month, Kramer made news discussing her approach to how much sunscreen she uses on her children.
Kramer has a daughter, Jolie, 9, and a son, Jace, 6, from her relationship with ex-husband Mike Caussin. Additionally, she shares a 20-month-old son named Roman with her husband Allan Russell.
“There’s a lot of harmful ingredients in sunscreen, so if we’re only out for a couple of hours — go ahead and judge me. I’m just not applying it,” she claimed. “I’ll use it if we’re at the beach for hours, where the reflection comes into play, and I’ll apply it on his neck, ears — the baby — but as for the kids, I haven’t used it on them because they won’t be getting burned. What’s worse — the burn or the sunscreen?”
Following the podcast episode, Kramer noted that 80% of her DMs were supportive and filled with kind messages, while the remaining 20% were less than pleasant, labeling her “an idiot.”
“I responded to a few and said, ‘No need to name-call,’” Kramer remarked. “I didn’t say I never use it. … I apply sunscreen on their neck, ears, and sometimes the legs if we’re going to the beach for a long day. But if it’s just for a couple of hours? No, I won’t, and that’s acceptable.”
The “Why Ya Wanna” singer reassured listeners that she welcomes feedback and indeed applies sunscreen when she feels it’s appropriate.
“Once again, I would never allow my kids to fry,” she asserted. “And I’m open to any kind, constructive feedback someone wants to share with me through DMs.”
