John Boyd Discusses Scola and Nina’s Future with the FBI and the Most Wanted Crossover
FBI star John Boyd is enthusiastic about the future of Scola and Nina on the CBS series following their emotional and heartfelt scene this week.
Warning: Spoilers ahead from FBI season 7, episode 9.
In the episode aired on Tuesday, January 28, of FBI, Special Agent Stuart Scola (Boyd) played a crucial role in preventing a potential terrorist attack after Bolivian extremists took control of several planes. This case was particularly personal for Scola, as his brother Doug lost his life during the 9/11 attacks.
After Scola and his team successfully intervened to stop a commercial airliner from being shot down by the government due to illegal airspace violations (while the terrorists were still in control), Scola confronted his inner struggles.
In a poignant moment towards the end of the episode, Scola shared that he had received a letter from the government regarding his brother’s passing. Rather than reading it himself, he asked his partner, Nina Chase (Shantel VanSanten), to do so.
“That was such a pivotal point in the scene,” Boyd, 43, told Us Weekly exclusively about the moment Scola opened up and sought support from Nina. “I thought, ‘It would be fascinating if Nina read the contents of that letter.’ And when I received the first draft, that’s precisely what the writers had envisioned.”
Through the letter, Scola and Nina learned that the government had finally located his brother’s remains, bringing some much-needed closure to his family after the 9/11 tragedy. (It was previously revealed that Doug’s death was a significant factor in Scola’s decision to leave Wall Street to join the FBI.)
“The vulnerability in asking [Nina] for help is crucial as it indicates he has reached a point where he’s ready and realizes he has family,” Boyd elaborated, emphasizing the character development Scola has undergone since his introduction.
He noted, “The previous Scola was filled with anger and resentment over the loss, grappling with the senselessness of that tragedy. Now, he’s in a place where he can reach out to his partner.” Boyd expressed that his character is “maturing” and he’s finally “in a good place.”
Scola and Nina began their romantic relationship in season 4 of FBI, with Nina joining the cast. By 2023, within season 5 of the flagship series, the couple welcomed a son named Dougie, named in honor of Scola’s late brother.
Nina subsequently transitioned to FBI: Most Wanted full-time during its fifth season in February 2024. Since then, the couple has been involved in crossovers on each other’s shows. According to Boyd, these crossovers will continue in the latter half of both Most Wanted season 6 and FBI season 7.
“Everything has settled in nicely,” Boyd remarked to Us regarding the couple’s upcoming developments. “Having found some closure around his brother, we’re ready for things to get interesting.”
The actor hinted that while there are no current plans for an engagement, marriage remains a possibility. “Every relationship has its own unique journey,” he said, remaining ambiguous about the pair’s future. “Whatever lies ahead, we’ll find a way to tell that story.”
Boyd also added that although a wedding hasn’t been scripted yet, audiences can expect to see him on Most Wanted later in the season.
“I’m going to appear on Most Wanted. I don’t have the script yet, but I’ve heard some details,” he disclosed. “It revolves around family dynamics. It’s going to delve more into Nina’s family, and I’ll be present for that.”
Nina is also set to return in season 7 of FBI for another episode centered on Scola.
“We’re working on an episode that explores Scola’s background. We’ll discover that he attended a military school that his parents sent him to in upstate [New York],” Boyd explained to Us in January. “We’ll learn more about his childhood and the challenges he faced.”
He referred to the upcoming episode as “super dark,” highlighting its “intense” revelations about the military school.
“It’s truly a fantastic episode,” Boyd concluded. “I’m really looking forward to it.”
FBI airs on CBS Tuesdays at 8 p.m. ET.
