John Cena Discusses His Hair Transplant Journey After Facing Online Mockery for Thinning Hair
John Cena expressed regret for not getting his hair transplant sooner.
The 48-year-old Cena opened up about his hair thinning as he ages in a cover story with People, published on Wednesday, August 6. Discussing aging, he revealed that he initially tried to “conceal [his] hair loss,” but WWE fans kept “bringing it to light.”
“I noticed fans holding signs that said ‘The bald John Cena,’” he recalled. He explained that online trolls motivated him to explore options for thickening his hair.
“I now have a routine: red-light therapy, minoxidil, vitamins, shampoo, conditioner — and I also underwent a hair transplant last November,” he shared. “I dislike the fact that if there weren’t such stigma around it, I would have done it 10 years ago. I thought I was alone, but seven or eight out of 10 [men] face thinning or baldness.”
Post-procedure, Cena is thrilled with the results. “They merely relocate your hair, one follicle at a time, from one area to another,” he explained, emphasizing he still feels “energized” about the subject.
“If someone is going to criticize me for this, I see no shame in it,” he added. “It has completely transformed my life.”
Cena also noted that with his new hairstyle, he has been able to secure more acting roles. “A different hairstyle can identify a character that might bring in more work, allowing me to pursue what I love.”
In April, Cena first revealed he had a hair transplant after facing “bullying” from WWE viewers.
“You chant and make me feel small; you embarrass me,” he said during an episode of The Pat McAfee Show. “You don’t understand what that experience is like. That’s just bullying, plain and simple. It’s not okay.”
He sarcastically added, “And by the way, thank you all for being so attuned to my needs and feelings, since you ripped me apart for a genetic issue I have no control over.”
